definite cure, but the amount of research done on this one disease costs on the
average of $1.2 billion dollars annually, and $20 billion annually in care of
cancer patients.

Cancer is a broad ranging term that is used by many people, including medical
professionals such as doctors. Cancer, in its most fatal and aggressive form, is
of a larger class of diseases known as neoplasms.

Cancer research is a multi-billion dollar industry made up of multiple organizations. It is a serious disease that has affected everyone in some way. All people know of or have experienced cancer first hand. The little glimpse of hope given by ongoing research gives people hope in the devastating time of experiencing the effects of cancer. Also, besides just feeling better and having a sense of hope, cancer research has prolonged people’s life. Since beginning research, the lifespan of people with cancer has increased since research began. Before research started, people diagnosed with cancer really found no hope, now the chances of them being cured are higher than ever and people are being cured commonly.
Every year, 12.7 million people globally are diagnosed with cancer and 7.6 million will die from the disease this year. Cancer causes more deaths than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. The World Health Organization projects that without immediate action, the worldwide number of deaths due to cancer will increase by almost 80% by 2030. Research suggests that one-third of cancer deaths are preventable. People can reduce their risk for cancer by regular cancer screenings, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol use, avoiding excessive exposure to the harmful rays of the sun and tanning beds, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, and being physically active.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, n.d.). Founded in 1949 and headquartered in White Plains, NY, LLS has chapters throughout the United States and Canada(Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, n.d.). The LLS mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world, provides free information and support services, and is the voice for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, n.d.). Every 4 minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer; and every 10 minutes, someone dies of a blood cancer (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, n.d.). In 2013, over 3,000 Missourians were diagnosed with a blood cancer. The LLS currently has nearly $4 million dollars invested in Missouri to find cancer cures(Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, n.d.).
The second alarming from the National Vital Statistics Report is the prevalence of cancer among the U.S. Population. Currently, there will be an estimated 1,665,540 new cases of cancer diagnosed this year and over 585,720 deaths from cancer (ACS, 2014). Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States and is responsible for a quarter of annual deaths. The cancer trends must also be deciphered because the trends consist of 23 cancer types with the most common areas being lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate (ACS, 2014). Therefore, the numbers are not just one type of cancer but are rather combined from the various different forms of the disease...

One other factor that I encountered while researching was that African American men were more likely to develop this cancer due to the lack of resources to help themselves.
The diagnosis of cancer is devastating news to anyone. It is common for people with such a life-threatening illness to have feelings of fear, disbelief, anxiety and depression. The cancer victim’s family, friends and community act as a net of support to lessen the negative impact of the disease and its treatment. These non-medical support systems, executed primarily by family, not only act as medical advocates, they also are the main caretakers of the patient, and they are the ones who bring much inspiration and encouragement to the patient. A cancer victim’s quality of life is positively impacted by family support before, during and after a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
