There is a major controversy over whether or not Americans should learn other languages or if other countries should learn English. Some people might say that it is extremely beneficial for English-speakers to learn a foreign language. Personally, I think quite the opposite. While I understand these opposing theories’ point of view, I simply disagree. Learning another language in America is a waste of time and mostly useless. I don’t think Americans should learn another language because it is a waste of resources, other countries can learn English, and because there is little value in it. While many people may think certain jobs require knowledge of a foreign language, I disagree. Take the largest management position, the President of the United States. President Barrack Obama said himself in a speech, “I don’t speak a foreign language.” (5) He knows just as much as most of us - a few phrases here and there such as “hello” and “how are you”. If a job requires a foreign language, the job should be responsible for advocating that knowledge.The only job that a foreign language is solely necessary for is a translator, which isn’t a likely job prospect for you if you don’t have a passion for learning to be multilingual. Also, if translators exist in our lives, why should we waste time learning another language since any job that requires it can simply hire a translator? Overall, learning a foreign language is unnecessary in today’s world. With English dominating the business industry and translators available, learning one is a waste of time and resources. Also, other countries can learn English since such a large amount of our population already knows it.
