The history of aviation is one driven by innovation and fearless individuals. It goes without saying that it takes a great deal of bravery to control tons of metal thousands of feet in the air. This goes even more so for earlier pilots that pioneered early aviation and boarded planes in the early twentieth century that were less than reliable compared to today’s aviation technology. One of these astounding individuals, Amelia Mary Earhart, goes down in history as being one as the most renowned aviators. Earhart is most notably known for her achievements in the world of aviation, contribution to the public view of aviation, and unfortunately her later disappearance. To begin, Earhart was born in Kansas in 1897 to the parents of Samuel and Amelia Earhart. From early on, Earhart defied traditional gender roles and was considered to be a tomboy; Earhart did things that girls her age usually did not do such as climb trees, play basketball, and even use a rifle to hunt rats (history.com). Lindbergh’s passion for mechanics didn’t come as a surprise to many. As a young boy, Charles seemed to be very interested in the family’s motorized vehicles, such as the Saxon Six automobile and Excelsior motorbike. But after starting college in the fall of 1920 as a mechanical engineer, his love for aviation started to bloom. Deciding that the field of aviation was more exciting, he dropped out within 2 years. He then decided to take lessons at the Nebraska Aircraft Corporation’s flying school and was up in the air for the first time on April 9, 1922 when he was in a two seat biplane as a passenger. But his solo flight would not be until May 1923 at the Souther Field in Americus, Georgia, an old flight training field where Lindbergh came to buy a World War I Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” biplane. It only took half an hour to practice with another pilot at the field to decide that Lindbergh was ready to fly the plane himself. After a week of practicing, Lindbergh took off on his biplane on his first solo cross country flight and few weeks after that, achieving his first nighttime flight near Arkansas, both marking huge milestones for the young pilot.
Eleanor Roosevelt was an outstanding First Lady, she was the longest lasting First Lady in office and helped define and shape the role of the First Lady’s duties in office. She played many roles as the First Lady, she made public appearances with her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt, she was a leading activist in women rights and civil rights, she held many press conferences, wrote a column daily in the newspaper, and hosted radio shows at least once a week. Though her and her husband’s time in office may have been difficult, Eleanor proudly supported New Deal programs and helped create many government programs such as the National Youth Administration and the Works progress Administration

Sally Ride changed society’s views on women, and made it into American history books. She impacted modern day space exploration and young women by being the first American woman in space as shown by her work for NASA and her dedication toward young women and girls pursuing careers in science and math.
Earhart was a very independent woman, and prided herself on this. Born on July 24th, 1897, from a very young age she embraced a sense of experimentation and physical freedom , which led to her success in woman’s rights later in her life. As a child Earhart described, “It has always seemed to me that boys and girls are educated very differently.” When Earhart got married to George Putnam she was very clear with him that “even though they were to be bound by marriage, she was still an individual woman with her own rights.” She even went as far as to say on her wedding day that she would “not hold [her husband, George Putnam] to any medieval code of faithfulness to me nor shall I consider myself to bound to you similarly.” She also would never take up her Putnam’s name in order to remain an independent woman; in fact her Putnam was often called Mr. Earhart.
Love’s marriage shot her into fame in society and the world of aviation. It was known as something of a love story, and put her in a perfect position to campaign for a woman’s flying squadron. Robert and Nancy built up an aviation company that was based in Boston, and she was allowed to be a pilot. She flew for the Bureau of Air Commerce doing things like testing three-wheeled landing gear, which was later standardized, and marking water towers with town names as a navigational aid for pilots. Her first proposal was seriously considered due to her qualifications, but they were later rejected. In May of 1940, Love wrote to Lieutenant Colonel Robert Olds, who was in charge of setting up a Ferrying Command for the Army Air forces. She offered him the assistance of forty-nine expert female flyers. The suggestion was made to General Hap Arnold, who turned it down temporarily.

The death of Amelia Earhart, has continued to bring up women’s accomplishments, which is why many decide to abandon the questions, and leave Amelia wherever she is. Instead of focusing on the one event that brought her life down, people can remember her for all the records she set, the people she helped, and the events that made her life so distinct in the eyes of Americans. Walter J. Boyne, a retired United States Air Force officer, once said, “Amelia Earhart came perhaps before her time,…the smiling, confident, capable, yet compassionate human being, is one of which we can all be proud.” Earhart and her adventurous life will never be forgotten, and instead will be honored and remembered.

Her mother’s name was Amy Earhart, her father’s name was Edwin Earhart, and she had a sister named Grace Earhart. Amelia’s family was different from many other people’s family back then. In the 1940’s World War II was the most widespread war in history. After Pearl Harbor was attacked the United States quickly became involved. Women pilots were utilized for the first time by the government. The Women AirForce Service Pilots (WASP) program freed up male pilots for combat service. The WASP’s exchanged knowledge and service for the U.S. While the program was active the 1,830 women who got accepted were given the opportunity to explore military aviation.

Earhart’s death shocked the nation. She was a role model to girls and women everywhere and was truly dedicated to bringing equal rights for women. After her death, George Putnam, her husband, published a book titled “Last Flight”. This book contained her journal entries from her voyage and a letter given to Putnam with instructions to only open if she did not return. The letter revealed she was aware of the dangers of the flight, but also that she wanted to do something that only men had tried done
In 1920 Amelia went to an airshow that kick started her love for airplanes. So shortly afterwards she started seeking flying lessons (not cheap). But after a year of saving and lessons she bought her first airplane, a Kinner Airster biplane that she called the “Canary”. So on May 15th of 1923 Amelia Earhert became the 16th woman to be issued a pilot license.
All three of Corn’s point really helps the reader to see that women really did play a key role in terms of making increasing aviation use. Corn splits the article into three separate points in which the audience sees how aviation was before female interaction, during female interaction, and after. He then presents the reader with a long list of primary sources, mostly from magazines and female aviators, to help convince the audience that his main point is valid. In the most part, the only weakness seen from Corn’s article is his lack of numerical proof that female aviators helped increase aviation and that some of Corn’s primary sources are from anonymous people, but looking beyond that we can see that Corn makes a compelling argument in representing female’s participation in the aviation world in the late 1920s and 30s.
Amelia was a woman who had the courage and independence to do what she wanted, like being the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a plane. She formed the first association of women aviators. In his 10 years he saw his first plane that did not make any impression and said that "it was a thing of rusty wire and wood and that did not seem interesting".
In 1943, not only had the female population contributed exponential numbers in support of the war but women had begun to dominate. Reports indicate that more than 310,000 women worked in the U.S. aircraft industry; this made up more than half of the total workforce. Prior to this moment in history, women’s involvement in the aircraft industry was merely one percent. Despite the manifestation of Rosie the Riveter propaganda and the continuous push to recruit women, they still were not granted equal pay for their services.
In the 1937 newspaper, article “Amelia’s Voice Heard by Amateur Radio Operator”, The Atchison Daily Globe reports on two Los Angeles amateur radio operators who claimed they heard Earhart transmit a distress signal at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time. The article expresses doubt about these clams using the statement “[In] San Francisco, however, a coastguard station reported at noon Eastern Standard Time it had received no word whatever although radio reception was unusually good” . The article also presents evidence supporting the two Radio operators, by explaining the amateur radio operators, “interpreted radio signals as placing the plane adrift near the equator between Gilbert Islands and Howland Island” . The article also, reports, because of this possible transmission from Earhart caused action, “the navy department ordered the battleship Colorado with three planes aboard, to begin a search from Honolulu, where it arrived yesterday ”.
