The dictionary defines power as the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Macbeth is a well written tragedy where it is clear that power is an evil force that has a reprehensible influence on specific individuals. Lady Macbeth is a smart, strong-willed ambitious, power-seeking woman. However, this ambition and outright ruthlessness drives her husband toward the desperate act of murder. Lady Macbeth is the puppet-master and Macbeth the puppet. In order to satisfy her lust for power, Lady Macbeth is willing to deceive her husband. Macbeth, on the other hand, was a loyal soldier, whose ambitious nature, with the help of his domineering wife, is reduced to a cold blooded murderer. As the play progresses, conversely, Macbeth becomes the one who is unyielding in his determination to protect his claim to the throne while Lady Macbeth, who cannot delight in the death of their victim, becomes delusional and suffers from overwhelming guilt. This essay will explore how ambitious power in due time changes both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s roles and their character and results in their ultimate destruction.
Macbeth is a soldier, devoted to his country and to his king. In fact, King Duncan is so impressed by Macbeth’s loyalty and service to his country he crowns him Thane of Cawdor. “For brave Macbeth, (well he deserves that name)/ Disdaining fortune, with his brandish’d steel” (1. 2.16,17). ...ness and sleep denies her its comfort and relief so she eliminates the pain of ill gained power by committing suicide. Lady Macbeth, once sharp and overbearing, becomes an unsettled and deranged woman who eventually takes her own life.
Ambition clearly has the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. In Macbeth, the roles eventually reversed. Macbeth became the puppet-master and Lady Macbeth, the puppet. What could once be seen as desired and quality character traits soon became both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s ultimate downfall. Macbeth goes from brave, loyal and honored person to an immoral, ambitious, murdering man. Lady Macbeth, a once controlling and aspiring woman becomes a psychotic paranoid woman who is unable to function. In the end, ambitious power results in the untimely ruin of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
