Thick sheets of bauxite form from weathering which Farndon explains on page 8 of his book called Aluminum, “In warm, moist climates, the clays break down to form thick sheets of bauxite, the raw material which aluminum is extracted”. The first step to create aluminum is mining bauxite from the earth’s surface. In the 15th century, people used pickaxes to mine bauxite (Farndon 5). But now bauxite is mined with heavy machinery (Facts). Bauxite can also be broken up by explosives (Farndon 8).

The most important compounds include the oxide, hydroxide, sulfate, and mixed sulfate compounds. Anhydrous aluminum chloride is important in the oil and synthetic-chemical industries. Many gemstones—ruby and sapphire, for example—consist mainly of crystalline aluminum oxide. Aluminum is the most abundant metallic constituent in the crust of the earth; only the nonmetals oxygen and silicon are more abundant. Aluminum is never found as a free metal; commonly as aluminum silicate or as a silicate of aluminum mixed with other metals such as sodium, potassium, iron, calcium, and magnesium.

Aluminum is not an element found in nature, it is found in the earth’s crust which is 8.2 percent of it. Aluminum is obtained from rocks called bauxite. It is the most available element. In the beginning, scientist suspected it was in the earth’s crust. There were many chemists who produced aluminum.
