Altruism

Birds chirping and children playing on every street corner, giggling and jumping rope. Every street is complete with several nice houses and big yards with white fences to accompany them. Every house has a happy family to live in it, a few children who joyfully skip home from school every day, a father and mother who come home after work each day, all without a care in the world. Each family is living a comfortable life able to afford most things and able to easily and quickly save for things not quite in their reach. There are no worries about how much money there will be to buy groceries after the bills are paid or what the family will have to give up to be able to keep a certain comfort that they currently enjoy. Each family in this town is living a picture perfect life that they would not trade for the world. This town is gated so that no outsiders may get in and intrude on the citizens way of life. They have achieved the perfect society and would not enjoy being interrupted. Outsiders are constantly at the gate knocking and waiting to be a part of this amazing community. They want to live the life the town has given the families that live there. If the people inside would allow the outsiders, who have terrible lives, no money, and no homes, inside they would ruin everything that the town has worked so hard to achieve, perfect harmony. The outsiders would bring nothing more with them than their sad lives of living on the streets, their filthy broken families, and no money to help the town grow. One day though the outsiders found their way in. With them they brought the opposite of the things they had in the town: cardboard boxes for houses, broken families, no money, no jobs, nothing. They had destroyed everything that the... ... middle of paper ... ...to know that these people were not simply being altruistic? We do not know that as they were killing these supposed witches, the persecutors were not only thinking of the other people in the towns and thinking of their best interest. Who is to say that killing others in these cases was not the right thing to do? There are many people around the world who are in need of altruistic people in their lives. Some long for help, other loathe it. Either way, since we have been given so much and others have so little, it is our job to help provide for those people. It is our job to make sure that we are not being selfish and taking more than we need instead of spreading the wealth throughout the impoverished world. The only way our world will ever step toward better lives for everyone is if we all stop being selfish and distribute the wealth and happiness we have been given.
