In the article “Struggles For Smarts” by Alix Spiegel, I chose to write about one of the response options. The one I chose was about if I had struggles in the past. One struggle I have had was in math. I also wanted to do a little research and explain what I found. The one thing I would consider something I struggled on in the past was math. Math was a weakness of mine and I hated it very much. Although math was a weakness of mine, my teachers got a little better and had more useful explanations. That helped me improved my knowledge on the math topics meet standards on test and practices. Now math is one of my favorite subjects and I understand it minus angles. I will say though, that I have been slowly starting to understand it better as
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
A TED Talk video is spreading ideas in a speech that takes about eighteen minutes or less.In a TED Video, the speaker uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, to persuade their audience to believe them.Ethos is an ethical appeal (credibility), convincing the audience that the speaker is someone worth them listening to.Pathos is when the speaker uses emotions to persuade their audience.Logos is when the speaker uses reasoning and common sense to get to their audience.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
In the music video titled “Numb,” directed by Joseph Hahn and sung by Linkin Park, a message of rebellion persuades a push for independence. Produced in 2003, the music video introduced a young girl who feels that she doesn’t fit in with everyone and is in an autopilot state to do what her mother thinks is right for her. The video alludes to her wanting to stand up to the pressure and fulfill her dreams of pursuing art. A dark theme towers over the music video to show that she is not happy and is trapped by her mother. This genre, alternative metal, voices rebellious young adults to take a stand and to get away from the pressures of life.
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
Eric schlosser, a writer for Atlantic Monthly, addresses in his article, “Kid Kustomer”, the various marketing strategies used on children to American parents after the success of ads for the young. Schlosser exemplifies how companies market their products to children in order to convince parents to recognize the fact that the advertisements produced by companies turn children into customers. He employs parallel syntax, figurative language, and a objective tone to accomplish his goal.
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
The piece that I will be analyzing is called How It Feels to Be Colored Me. This piece appealed to me because she described her point of view through the use of anecdote. Her perspective of being different caught my attention because most articles about being colored are so clique. This one is out of the ordinary because she thinks of being colored as a good thing. The only thing that could be difficult to analyze about this piece would understand how she feels because back then, black people were treated horribly.
Joy Harjo uses a metaphor throughout the memoir Crazy Brave , in order to express her emotions about how she feels about art, her classmates , and the books she has read .
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
The majority of people have a subject they were never good at. Unless your a genius or have a photographic memory, kudos to you. But the rest of us have to work twice as hard to achieve a passing grade to at least pass the class. Some of us have been told, horrible things that discourages us and we just give up. Verbal words, that have a huge negative impact on us. Now, this paper isn’t to make you feel sorry about yourself, this paper is to reflect on your ups and downs on the subject you had the most trouble at. I know its scary admitting your faults but how can you move one from your faults if you don’t admit them? But while admitting your faults you also have your strengths, even if it was determination to keep going, that is something you should be proud of, because you never gave up.
When I was growing up, I struggled a great deal in school! In third grade I started a new school. They had three tiers of classes. One with the regular kids, another with kids that needed a little bit of help in math and reading, and thirdly, a category that had mentally retarded children learning life skills. I was being placed in that third tier. I absolutely loved school before they had placed me in that class. All that
When I was in the sixth grade I started failing classes and I didn’t know how to fix it. I was to afraid to ask the teacher for help because I was far enough behind already. I didn’t have a lot of friends either, which decreased my chances farther from getting help. My mother was never good in school either, and my step-dad was always at work. So I realized I would have to get better on my own. At that moment I started paying a lot more attention to what was going on around me. I also had the privilege of a tutor in class, and math was her specialty.
Everyone has challenges in their life and mine were speech and depression. From preschool to second grade I had to take “special” classes because my English was far more behind than everyone else’s. At the time I didn’t notice anything different, though now I realize that without those classes school would of been twice as hard. I overcame this challenge by simply going to school and learning. I found out that school can help with anything, for this reason I love learning to this day. I began noticing a negative change with myself throughout middle school, which now I classify as my second challenge, depression. I was sometimes slower at completing a written paper or an assignment. In open discussions about material we had just read, things weren’t sticking with me after reading to feel confident to raise my hand and be active with discussions. I would have to search for answers in my memory for some time. Sometimes answers just weren’t retrieved at all. I became frustrated in school often, and eventually developed a negative attitude toward school. I struggled a lot with this because I knew I could do better. Every day I prepared myself for failure because I lacked the tools and strategies that I needed to succeed in school. Granted, I got by, but I could have been a much better student. I earned low B’s and C’s, but should have been A’s.
