In 2014, imagination and hallucination seem common for some who use drugs. Whether a person is watching a television show, video, or movie, drugs seem to have an impact on some of the characters. It is rumored that the author of Alice in Wonderland used the drug opiate. Perhaps, the influence of drugs contributed to the adventures Alice experienced in the book. In this paper, I will share three scenes that were very vivid to me. Then I will try to show how imagination, drugs, and hallucination may have enhanced the story.
Drugs are not good for a person to take or use all the time. Many people use prescription drugs or over the counter medicine because they are not feeling well. Lewis Carroll use of opiate affected his book, Alice in Wonderland. Many people say that Lewis Carroll didn’t use the drug (opiate) when he was writing Alice in Wonderland. Three memorable scenes that I remember from the book support the possibility that Mr. Carroll use of opiate to relieve pain affected his book. His use of imagination and hallucination enhanced the adventures. The three scenes are: Alice going down a rabbit hole, shrinking, and growing extremely big.
Drugs impact how people think, act and live. Drugs influence the imagination and may cause people to believe things in their mind that are not true or real. Sometime when we get bored, our minds start to wonder. Curiosity creeps in. Ordinary and little things around us start to look different. The things may remind us of what we saw in a movie, video or television show.

Almost one hundred years ago, prescription drugs like morphine were available at almost any general store. Women carried bottles of very addictive potent opiate based pain killers in their purse. Many individuals like Edgar Allen Poe died from such addictions. Since that time through various federal, state and local laws, drugs like morphine are now prescription drugs; however, this has not stopped the addiction to opiate based pain killers. Today’s society combats an ever increasing number of very deadly addictive drugs from designer drugs to narcotics to the less potent but equally destructive alcohol and marijuana. With all of these new and old drugs going in and out of vogue with addicts, it appears that the increase of misuse and abuse is founded greater in the prescription opiate based painkillers.
When Alice turns around she sees the Duchess trying to be friends with her and making Alice uncomfortable. The Queen of Hearts then walks up and asks Alice if she has heard the Mock Turtle’s story yet. Then saying she hasn’t Alice is escorted by the gryphon to go listen to the Mock Turtle’s story. On the way to meet the turtle the gryphon told Alice the queen never executes anybody. When they finally get there the gryphon asks to hear the story and the turtle says sit down. He then starts by saying he used to be a real turtle once. The Mock Turtle then tells about school and his teachers from when he was young and how they “lessened” their lessons everyday.
Opiates are a class of drugs that are used for chronic pain. Opioids are substances that are used to relieve pain by binding opiate receptors throughout the body, and in the brain. These areas in the brain control pain and also emotions, producing a feeling of excitement or happiness. As the brain gets used to these feelings, and the body builds a tolerance to the opioids, there is a need for more opioids and then the possibility of addiction.
Opioids are used as pain relievers and although it does the job, there are adverse side effects. Opioids are frequently used in the medical field, allowing doctors to overprescribe their patients. The substance can be very addicting to the dosage being prescribed to the patient. Doctors are commonly prescribing opioids for patients who have mild, moderate, and severe pain. As the pain becomes more severe for the patient, the doctor is more likely to increase the dosage. The increasing dosages of the narcotics become highly addicting. Opioids should not be prescribed as pain killers, due to their highly addictive chemical composition, the detrimental effects on opioid dependent patients, the body, and on future adolescents. Frequently doctors have become carless which causes an upsurge of opioids being overprescribed.

In 1805, morphine and codeine were isolated from opium, and morphine served as a cure for opium addiction since its addictive characteristics were not known. Morphine’s use as a treatment for opium addiction was initially well received as morphine has about ten times more euphoric effects than the equivalent amount of opium. Over the years, however, morphine abuse increased.
The Queen of Hearts is the malicious ruler of Wonderland from Lewis Carroll’s 1875 novel ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ When Alice enters Wonderland she is unfortunately greeted by the violent, temper filled, condescending personality of the Queen. The Queen of Hearts seems to have a passion for demanding the execution of the people of Wonderland, specifically by beheading. Yet her actions are very rarely followed through, thanks to the King of Hearts convincing her to withdraw her statements or quietly pardoning them when the Queen looks away. “Off with her head!” page 73. The Queen uses this phrase many times throughout the book, as a writing tactic of Neil Gaiman to show the personality of the Queen, which remains the same throughout the book.
It is said that they had many different uses for it. Uses ranged from relaxing to calming a young child (History of Drug Abuse). It is also believed that Opium was not only used for medical purposes, but also for rituals. When used in rituals, it was used by magicians, priests, warriors and shamans (About Opiate Addiction). It was not until much later that people began using opiates recreationally. This occurred around the fourteenth century in the Middle East, fifteenth century in China and late in the 1800’s for the United States. Once the Chinese began immigrating to the United States, they brought Opium with them and introduced the Americans to abusing and depending on it (About Opiate Addiction). Another take on where opium came from originally is from London. It is also believed that opium was big in London, and introduced to America when it would be shipped overseas to settlers here in the United States (The history of drug). It seems safe to say that no one truly knows exactly where the use of opiates originated or when it did. History in this matter is just not clearly stated
Lewis Carroll's use of puns and riddles in Alice in Wonderland help set the theme and tone. He uses word play in the book to show a world of warped reality and massive confusion. He uses such play on words to reveal the underlying theme of growing up', but with such an unusual setting and ridiculous characters, there is need for some deep analyzing to show this theme. The book contains many examples of assonance and alliteration to add humor. Carroll also adds strange diction and extraordinary syntax to support the theme.

Alice in wonderland has compelled many artists and writings to adapt, Lewis Carroll 's book into movies. The original animated movie of Alice in Wonderland came out in 1951; which was produced by Disney. There have been many remakes, but for the purpose of this essay the 2010, live action remake by Tim Burton can reveal the most change. Keeping these two versions in mind, it is possible to get a snapshot of some ways American culture has shifted over the 59 year period. There are five main changes of importance from the original and the remake of Alice in Wonderland. Those changes are: the age of Alice, the dynamic of characters in Wonderland, the Gender roles, the violence, and the agency of Alice throughout the movie. These key changes can be linked to many subliminal messages being conveyed about American

Drugs affect your brain and in turn can alter your moods and behavior. Drugs are chemicals that tap into our brain’s communication system and disrupt the way nerve cells receive, send and process information. Drugs interfere with the exchange of information in the brain producing changes that promote repeated drug use. Drugs can imitate the brain’s natural chemical messengers, or they over stimulate the reward circuit of our brain.
Here she finds a strange caterpillar on a mushroom smoking a hookah. It doesn’t even matter that the caterpillar talks and questions Alice about her identity, the way he looks should be enough for Alice and the audience to question their sanity. Upon being asked who she is by the caterpillar, Alice has no idea anymore. She is becoming as mad as she believes the inhabitants of Wonderland to be. The caterpillar seems to be able to read Alice’s thoughts now ‘Just as if she had asked it aloud’ - which leads us to believe that Alice is so confused about her identity that perhaps her thoughts aren’t even hers anymore. By the end of this chapter we again see characters leave Alice in anger as she insults the caterpillar on his height and scares the pigeon who believes her to be a serpent. The caterpillar and pigeon both found Alice to be very strange indeed, yet their surroundings were absolutely normal to them - which again shows that Alice is the only odd thing in Wonderland and is able to upset the
