Alcohol is still intoxicating and killing many people each year. Making a new drinking law shouldn’t be put into place because is you were to lower it to 18 years of age it would interfere with the development of the young teens brains. Most teens see it as if they can be 18 then why should they have to wait till they are 21 to be able to legally drink. Even though an 18 year old in the US has the right to vote and serve in the military they should have the rights to drink and purchase alcohol; the alcohol age of 21 should not be lowered to the age of 18 because alcohol can lead to depression and depression leads to unplanned things and sometimes violent things, also many teens who are 18 will be more openly to drunk driving (Cynthia Patterson, Tapert). An 18 year old in the US has the right to vote, and serve in the military so they should have the right to drink and purchase alcohol because since they are considered an adult then they should take responsibilities of adulthood. Lowering the Minimum Legal Drinking Age(MLDA) from 21 to 18 would diminish the thrill of breaking the law to get a drink. Another example that shows that an 18 year old in the United States has the right to vote and serve in the military then they should also have the right to drink and purchase alcohol is that lowering MLDA 21 would reduce the the number of underage people who are hurt from alcohol related injuries or accidents due to fear of legal consequences if they sought medical attention. This would mean that they would have the responsibilities of being an adult who is consuming alcohol because it their own bodies and they choose what to put in their bodies whether they are responsible or not. So what if many Americans drink and get drunk just because they think they are cool? But what they don’t realize is that they could be hurting someone or even them selves and having tragedies, murders, homicides, even suicides on their hands. Alcohol is a dangerous substance.
