General relativity is also known as general theory of relativity. It is a theory of gravitation that was published by Albert Einstein in 1915. According to general relativity, the observed gravitational effect between masses results from their warping of spacetime. The curvature of spacetime is directly related to the energy and momentum of whatever matter and radiation are present. The relation of Einstein field equations specify how the geometry of space and time is affected by any matter and radiation are present, and form the main idea of Einstein's general theory of relativity.
The direction of Mercury's orbit is found to precess in space over time, as indicated in the adjacent figure that is called the "precession of the perihelion". It causes the precession of the perihelion to move and this part can be considered for by perturbations in Newton's theory. Urbain Le Verrier was first recognized anomalous rate of precession of the perihelion of Mercury's orbit in 1859 as a problem in celestial mechanics. His re-analysis of available timed observations of transits of Mercury over the Sun's disk from 1697 to 1848 showed that the actual rate of the precession disagreed from that predicted from Newton's theory by 38" (arc seconds) per tropical century. A number of ad hoc and ultimately unsuccessful solutions were proposed, but they tended to introduce more problems. In general relativity, this remaining precession, or change of orientation of the orbital ellipse within its orbital plane, is explained by gravitation being mediated by the curvature of spacetime.
