For many years, Salalah, Oman, has attracted visitors from other Arabian Gulf countries during the months of July and August because of the Khareef season, the climactic anomaly that brings gentle monsoon rains to the otherwise arid southern
Arabian Peninsula. European tourists and more recently American tourists have begun to appreciate the beauty of this region during the winter months as it offers relaxation as well as cultural history to holidaymakers.
Al Baleed in Salalah is the ancient shipping port of Zufur and continues to be an attraction for archaeologists as well as tourists. This ‘user-friendly’ dig site, offers visitors many opportunities to view the site; on occasion, visitors might have the opportunity to observe excavations in process. Visitors are afforded the opportunities to experience life in old Dhofar by participating in:
 tours of the two museums: The Museum of the Frankincense Land and the
Maritime Museum,
 tours around the dig site on ‘golf carts’ that accommodate up to eight passengers,  walks around the dig site.
