Introduction
This paper is attempting to address the problem of air pollution with a feasible solution in Kabul city which is nowadays a virtual threat to the life of Kabul citizens. Kabul city was designed for about one million people and was a haven for it’s of residence but now Kabul is home to around the five million people. Hence, since Kabul has come to known as the city of hope and opportunity, it has faced large scale immigration and unplanned housing this has resulted to turn Kabul into one of the world most dirties city. After more than 3 decades of conflict, Afghanistan is busy rebuilding and establishing itself. A lot of preexisting services, facilities, and capacities have either been destroyed by war or no longer meet the growing demands of the population. As the economy grows, there are increasing demands for energy and mobility. Households and industries are forced to resort to using adulterated fuels and even garbage as fuels for heating and cooking. Also, due to second-hand vehicles which uses poor-quality fuel and with high rates of emissions are increasingly being imported into Afghanistan. The major sources of air pollution in Afghanistan are the transport and energy sectors. The country’s main pollutant is particulate matter. The predicted ambient concentrations are very high and are likely to result in significant impacts on the health of the population. Toxic gas emissions may be expected from the use of plastic and rubber as fuels. After more than 30 years, it will be the first time in decades that environmental issues, such as air quality, are given any attention. For this purpose the legislative body needs to pass laws that would obligate the media to allocate a certain amount of their time and resources to protection of the environment. Different environment protection campaigns and mechanisms that cover different age groups and members of society can be designed and promoted. Internet is another good tool for such kind of campaigns and public awareness in Kabul, and even in the provinces. For instance a facebook page can be created under the name of NEPA, which posts some very encouraging things about life in the city, reports about environmental pollution and how risky it is for human beings, academic information about importance of environment for sound health, and creates events for volunteer work for cleaning the city, planting trees and under taking greenery projects.
