When you hear this phrase you don't instantly think about Afghanistan. Kabul, Afghanistan however was know as the Garden City for a long time. This however does not ring true today. After decades of war Afghanistan's agricultural prowess is not what it once was. Before the Soviet Invasion in 1978 agriculture was responsible for nearly half of the countries Gross Domestic Product. Afghanistan once accounted for almost sixty percent of the worlds dried fruit. It is estimated that well over twelve thousand jobs have been created in the past few years due to the increase in the agriculture industry. Over six thousand families have been positively impacted because of it as well. Everyone in the country has benefited from the success in bettering Afghanistan's agriculture, weather directly or indirectly. It is estimated by the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries that in the first part of 2013 there was a forty percent increase in exported goods as well as a six percent decrease in imports. This can be seen due to the better agriculture. Better water irrigation, better knowledge of how to farm more efficiently, an increase in farming better crops, reduction of plant diseases, favorable climate, better roads, better relations with other countries, and other factors have contributed to these good …show more content…

    Although not directly related to community gardens in America, I found this article interesting and exciting regarding the importance of urban gardens outside the United States. The urban gardens of Istanbul that are in danger of being bulldozed have fed people for over 400 years. The land has been farmed by Armenians, Bulgarians, Albanians, and more recently, Syrian and Afghan refugees. They have been the only source of food for many who would otherwise starve. Mr. Shopov has studied urban farming extensively.
