Age discrimination, is any action that may limit, prevent or deny opportunities to individuals based on their age. The legal term for Age discrimination is defined as “the practice of letting a person's age unfairly become a factor when deciding who receives a new job, a promotion, or other job benefit” (US Legal Inc., 2017). Dr. Robert N. Butler created the term “ageism”, he was an advocate for the elderly, recognizing that discrimination against the elderly was occurring way too often. Dr. Butler was the voice for the elderly opening the gateways into brining awareness nationally to fight ageism. ADEA also holds employers accountable in handling and reprimanding those harassing fellow employees, whether it is a fellow employee, customer or even upper management ageism should not be allowed. “The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has received more than 19,000 age discrimination complaints in each of the past two years, and has helped win tens of millions of dollars in settlements” (The Associated Press, 2013). Businesses can face many repercussions and legal battles if they are not careful, with guidance from attorneys they can avoid getting into sticky situations. We are to respect and honor everyone, so let us not be biased against the elderly for they are wiser, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12, ESV).
