Against the War in Iraq
It has been more than one month since the war in Iraq started. The situation between Iraq and the US has been very serious. Many television and radio stations in the US have been broadcasting about the war in Iraq. At first, the war was a very big issue among people in Flagstaff, but as time passed, people did not mention about the war so much. It seems like people in Flagstaff got accustomed to this war. A possible reason for this behavior is because Flagstaff is not likely to be a target of attacks from Iraq.
However, my friend who is living in Washington D.C. told me about the situation there. Everyday, what she finds on the streets in the town are many tanks and soldiers of the US military: they secure people, the capital of the United States, and President Bush. Those things, which represent the danger for the people in the US by the attacking from Iraq or any other terrorist groups, make her so afraid of living in Washington D.C. It means that she lives with the fear of death everyday although the US is still safer than Iraq right now because Iraqi people are living in more terrible and dangerous situations. Therefore, the US and Iraq should stop the war as soon as possible for the peace of people all over the world.
Actually, this war is very frightening not only to people in Iraq and the US, but also people all over the world. Many critics say that the war could become World War III. One of the reasons the war could possibly be such a big war is because of the weapons both countries have. The US has been suspicious of Iraq’s possessing nuclear and biological weapons. However, Iraq declared to the United Nations that they do not possess any of them. Moreover, the US says th...

Much of life results from choices we make. How we meet every circumstance, and also how we allow those circumstances to affect us dictates our life. In Marian Minus’s short story, “Girl, Colored," we are given a chance to take a look inside two characters not unlike ourselves. As we are given insight into these two people, their character and environment unfolds, presenting us with people we can relate to and sympathize with. Even if we fail to grasp the fullness of a feeling or circumstance, we are still touched on our own level, evidencing the brilliance of Minus’s writing.

The Iraq war, also known as the second Gulf War, is a five-year, ongoing military campaign which started on March 20, 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by U.S. troops. One of the most controversial events in the history of the western world, the war has caused an unimaginable number of deaths, and spending of ridiculous amounts of money. The reason for invasion war Iraq’s alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction, which eventually was disproved by weapons inspectors. Many people question George W. Bush’s decision to engage a war in Iraq, but there might be greater reason why the decision was made. The ideas of George W. Bush might have been sculpted by one of the greatest works of all time, "The Prince."
Praying in school was first addressed in the Supreme Court in 1962 in the Engle v. Vitale case. The Establishment Clause emerged and stated Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. The court ruled the Union Free School District in Hyde Park, NY had violated the First Amendment by directing the principals to cause the following prayer to be said aloud by each class in the presence of a teacher at the beginning of each school day: “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our Country” (Longley, "Public"). I agree with the courts ruling because not all students in a classroom share the same beliefs. To cause everyone to say this prayer surely violates their rights.
...most sought after of God’s creations created a division of class to subjugate and vilify each other, the true meaning and purpose of life and taken a tragic hit. If humans were born to destroy humans and not live in amity with each other, wasn’t this a clear indication of mankind forgetting its purpose. The solution of life as a medium of meaning and universal problems of life could propel mankind to be far superior in intellect than thought would pose an obvious question, Would man need to reassess and relook into the ways of his purpose and change himself to save his future generations from the follies of his forebears in order to achieve concord and constancy that was and is the main ingredient to keep the human race glued to each other? I feel man failed in his fight for petty power over the kindness of the human soul. In the end, it is the pen that wins.
What does the United States have to gain from a war with Iraq? Supporters of a war with Iraq say it will help prevent the risk of an attack by a weapons of mass destruction developed by Iraq. Critics of a military action that say nothing will be gained, and the U.S. just wants to obtain the oil that Iraq controls. They claim that casualties will be too costly for America to afford. Nonetheless, America should act while others will not for fear of disturbing global peace. Iraq poses a “clear and present danger” to the security of the United States and the security of countries around the world.
Another valid point is that it goes against what our country was built upon. America was formed because the colonists wanted religious freedom. When our Founding Fathers came to the States over from England, one of main issues was that over in England, religion was forced upon the people and individual choices as to what to believe weren’t an option. When our countries Founding Fathers wrote the constitution, they were very careful about granting the freedom of separation of church and state. Many Americans feel that having prayer in school would indeed violate that part of our constitution.
School prayer is a very controversial issue in today’s society. The issue of school prayer is about whether the public school systems should let the students pray, at the start of the school day, as a class. The issue of school prayer began in the late sixteenth century when people in England did not approve of the way one religion was forced upon them, so the Puritans, known as the Pilgrims decided to come to the colonies. Even in the colonies the Pilgrims had problems with religion they had to sometimes resort to highly creative strategies in order to pray. When people were caught having a secret service they would have to face the consequences that the law enforced, whether it was going to the gaol, being kicked around, or being killed. In 1688 these situations were so awful that something had to be done, so the Toleration Act of 1689 was established. It was an incomplete solution and it had a lot of loopholes but it was a step in the right direction. Students today have to sometimes resort to highly creative strategies in order to pray in a public school, so as not to offend anyone.
The irony used in this short story conveys the theme of race by giving the reader a think situation in which they can analyze the color of each character but not giving away their race completely. Chopin describes Armand as having “a dark, handsome face that had not often been disfigured by frowns since the day he fell in love with her.” The author is describing how Armand of a bad attitude has changed since his newborn has been in his life. This portrays the difference in his attitude towards situations that before he use to frown about, now he may not pay attention to this so much. Armand is seemed in this scene as a dark faced guy because of this attitude and grieve, but he is darker then Desiree.
With all the arguments on whether prayer should be allowed in schools, the history behind all the debate on this issue is back and fourth if they should have it or not. Prayer should be one of the main priorities in the day-to-day bases. This day and time, U.S. citizens don’t want to hurt any ones feelings such as; prayer or even reading scripture from the Bible. This great country that we live in was founded upon God and we have gone so far from it in the past two hundred years or more. All the debate goes back to probably a few people that didn’t want prayer in schools anymore.
The issue concerning prayer in school has been active for several years and continues to be a topic of debate. With increasing concerns about our children's moral foundation and safety, how can there be a negative view of allowing children to voluntarily pray in school? The recent shootings that have taken place in our nations schools, injuring and killing many of our children, has brought to light issues concerning the lack of moral standards among our countries youth. Whatever your religious belief, the concept of asking for help and guidance from a higher power when you are confronted with difficult situations or dilemmas, at the minimum, gives us a chance to step back and evaluate what is going on in our lives. If only for a minute, it gives us the opportunity to pause and concentrate on what is really bothering us. Even if you do not believe in the Christian religion, or any religion for that matter, the Bible is filled with sound morals and practices, which in a time of despair, could aid in guiding a person to make the right decision or offer piece of mind.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances,” what the First Amendment is basically saying is that the Government really shouldn’t take away the rights for anything that has to do with religion, etc. Everyone has freedom of speech and the freedom to do as their pleased. Prayer should be allowed in the public school systems; you may ask yourself why, well it’s because prayer is a very important thing to do. I know many people may think what does prayer have to do with school, but it has a lot to do with school. Some kids may be having a tough day at school so they take a moment to pray to themselves. Praying at school as a young child is a very great thing. A child that is taking the time to pray could be praying that God will guide them through the day and help them make good choices. Allowing kids to pray in school may help keep them out of all the drama.
“Artificial sweeteners have also been increasingly tied to increased risk for developing metabolic syndrome and related diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.” In many cases, diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome are link to the overuse of artificial sweeteners. Some of the consumers of these sugars don’t realize how harmful these sweeteners can be and what damage they can cause to the body. Splenda, Equal, and Stevia are some of the most common sugars used in the United States and North America. People should become more aware of the ingredients on the nutrition labels of each of these sugars. This will lower the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and many other serious health issues. Just to name
Prayer in public schools can affect a young person in many mental and physical ways. yes, government interference is frowned upon by some, but mandating school prayer will help someones morals, conscience, and their life as a future adult. throughout many states in america there is proof of the founding fathers establishing this country on God. religion has played a major role in defining this country's destiny and will continue to do so for decades to come.
Walter Mignolo’s piece, “The Idea of Latin America,” clearly states that it is near impossible to escape coloniality upon entering the certainty or belief that you have to catch up with modernity. Having certainty or belief that you have to catch up with modernity was very efficient when it can to the fiction of imaginary of the Europeans. To my understanding, this is something that continues to be struggled with.
