State of Resistance
According to Miriam Webster Dictionary, resistance is “refusal to accept something new or different, effort made to stop or to fight against someone or something, or the ability to prevent something from having an effect” (Miriam Webster Dictionary). With the historical question, “Would it be correct to suggest that Africans who were brought to the so-called “New World” submitted tamely to slavery?” The answer I believe, would be no. According to oxfordbibliographis.com, Maroons can be defined as “people who escaped slavery to create independent groups and communities on the outskirts of slave societies” (Kars). So, that means Maroons are rebelling slaves who made their own culture. There can be two types of maroonage, petit or grand. Petit Maroonage is “running away, [and] refers to a strategy of resistance in which individuals or small groups, for a variety of reasons, escaped their plantations for a short period of days or weeks and then returned” (Kars). From what I infer, petit, could be in reference to the number of people or the amount of time the slaves stayed away. Next, is Grand Maroonage. The actual definition of Grand Maroonage is “people who removed themselves from their plantations permanently. Grand maroonage could be carried out by individuals or small groups, or it could be the result of plantation-wide breakouts, or even colony-wide rebellions” (Kars). Grand Maroonage is a large scale rebellion in which “grand” refers to both the large amount of time spent away and the amount of people.
