African American Interview Essay

For this exercise I interviewed one of my really close friend, Patrick Kimani. He is an international student from Africa. He was born in a small remote village outside of Nairobi, Kenya called Ngenia. He came from a very low income family and had a very difficult time paying for school. Growing up he got an amazing opportunity to be in a documentary called, “A Small Act.” In this documentary Kimani played himself; a small boy who was very poor but since he received one of the highest marks in his class he received a scholarship to go to high school. Kimani maintained high marks throughout high school and was able to come to the United States to attend college. He does not consider himself African-American because he is not a citizen of the United States and after he finishes his education he is to return back to Africa.Just like in the article, “What's in a name” Kimani is very similar. In the article African-Americans wanted to be called Americans because they were born in America. Just like Kimani wants to be called African becuase thats where he was born. He also identifies himself as a strong christian. In his home town religion is not just a religion but it is their way of life. Their religion says a lot about how they treat people and how they work together in a community. He says his morals and values comes from him being Kenyan, and …show more content…

Even though Kimani has been in the states for over a year now he still holds strong sense of his culture. To him his culture and religion is his way of life. He has not let the American culture get to him. Kimani strongly respects his elders no matter who they are. He also hold strong values when it comes to family. He has three sisters and a mother back home in Kenya and he always put them first even though he is in a different continent. I really value Kimani and upholding his culture.It has been a hrd transition but Kimani shows his cultures to others while still learning from others in
