The purpose of this paper is to debate why the current Affirmative Action Policy needs to be improved in higher education. Affirmative action is an outcome of the 1960's Civil Rights Movement, intended to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups and women in education and employment (National Conference). Affirmative Action policies in the United States are only implemented if the employer or institution receives federal money. Generally, when the policy is implemented it is stating that at some point the company or institution will have to higher or accept minorities, or women if they are lacking in diversity in minorities or women. Through a research project, that is "assessing the affirmative action commitment of postsecondary institutions" (Silvestri and Kane 445). The findings of the experiment were that "the institutions that advertised available administrative positions in the May 13, 1974 Chronicle may generally be described as displaying only a reluctant commitment to affirmative action recruitment in the context of our project." Although this research project did not address all the parts of affirmative action it did a study that brought light as to how Affirmative Action does not work in higher education administrative positions. This paper will also involve a current situation at William Peace University in Raleigh, North Carolina between students and the higher education administrative staff on campus. Current minority students have consistently for the past five years have been asking for a black history program, and to have Historically Black Greek Organizations on campus, and they have consistently been given the run around, as to why not the all-Caucasian administration wants those
