Advertisement is everywhere around us and there is no way of escaping it. Every time you turn there is advertisement weather you can see it or not. When you turn the TV on there is advertisement, there’s billboards almost everywhere you look, social media, internet, newspapers, and magazines. Advertisement is found pretty much everywhere you look. Social media sites such as Facebook and twitter spend billions of dollars on advertisement. When you are scrolling down your new feed you can an ad for Finishline or a credit card companies. For an example, the other day I was on Facebook and I saw an ad for Nordstorm for some shoes and I clicked on it and bought the shoes right away. That’s how companies trick you. Tao-te Ching asks in his reading, “Do you want to improve the world? I don’t think it can be done” (209). What he means by this is that the society and the world is already so messed up nothing can be done to change it. I agree with him on this 100 percent. This means that they must find a way to sell their products or they will perish. This problem gave way to advertising- a way for companies to present their product in a way that makes potential consumers desire them. The Propaganda campaign grew extremely fast, as a staggering one hundred seventy five billion dollars a year is spent on advertising. Advertisements of which could exist for anything, from pencils, laptops, plates, food and sports. Advertisements can be found anywhere - beneath your feet, on a building, on TV, on the internet, in a magazine and more.
Is advertising the ultimate means to inform and help us in our everyday decision-making or is it just an excessively powerful form of mass deception used by companies to persuade their prospects and customers to buy products and services they do not need? Consumers in the global village are exposed to increasing number of advertisement messages and spending for advertisements is increasing accordingly.
Advertising is designed to foster a desire to purchase goods and services, yet it is much deeper than that—advertising is a system of effective manipulation that twists the mentalities of those subjected to it. It shapes people’s views of the world and warps their connections to each other. Therefore, advertising not only shapes their personal values but also distorts them until their principles no longer come from within them. Thus, in my opinion, advertising, unless deeply rooted in high ethical standards, destroys any concept of community, common morality or deep bonding.
Every year Americans are bombarded with thousands of ads for products that companies want consumers to buy, whether it is from the internet, television, radio, or print Americans see advertisements wherever they go. Thus, advertising companies have been using different advertising tactics to lure people into buying their products since, according to American Consumerism and the Global Environment, America became a consumer-based economy and society (“American Consumer Society”). Many of the tactics used by advertisers are considered deceiving and unfair. They use different techniques to attract our attention and get consumers to purchase their product. According to a handout provided by William Myers, there are two types of techniques used in ads: rhetorical and graphic (n.p.). Rhetorical techniques used in ads are the way that the advertisers can manipulate words to attract and convince consumers to buy their product. The rhetorical techniques that are used in ads are known as weasel words which, according to William Lutz, “Advertisers use weasel words to appear to be making a claim for a product when in fact they are making no claim at all” (309). Lutz is an English professor for Rutgers University who specializes in doublespeak and more specifically weasel words (304). While the rhetoric advertisers employ may make it seem like they want the consumer to get the best product, according to Stuart Hirschberg, “the underlying intent of all advertising is to persuade specific audiences” (227). Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Looking through the eyes of an adolescent, many things are seemingly a necessity. From clothes to materialistic things, advertising has brainwashed the American society and has stripped them of their better judgement. Although there are many perks to advertising like awareness, promotion, and entertainment, the advertising world is harmful to society.
Advertising is the most profitable market that thrives with aggressive manipulation. Radio, magazines and TV are dangerous past-times that wash away our good intentions with subliminal messages spread thick like peanut butter. Suddenly we question the healthier approach to living we have been striving for. Why? Advertising. How is it that we are so easily influenced? Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs teaches advertisers the weaknesses in all of us, making it very easy to grab our attention and influence our buying behavior. As Stuart Hirschberg wrote in The Rhetoric of Advertising, “ads can be effective if they appeal to the needs, values, and beliefs of the audience” (Hirschberg 102). Advertisements promise a more fulfilling life (Hirschberg 104), but in actuality they create an ominous void that no product can fill. We become self-absorbed, materialistic, never satisfied, pretentions and ironically insecure individuals. It is too bad that our vain tendencies trumps our desire to become positive, self-assured, and healthy individuals.
Advertising in its purest form has been an essential part of the business world for centuries. The purpose of advertising is to inform society of a certain product and/or service that has become available. Advertising is used as a method of communication between a consumer and the company in which the product is from, because it persuades the consumers to take action. According to Lindsay in “The Case of Print Media Advertising in the Internet Age” the individuals who are above the age of 18 and reside in America, spend a total of 9 hours, and 35 minutes using media per day (2007). In figure 1 it shows that non-print advertisements represent the majority of the time spent utilizing this media. The pie-chart showed that certain individuals spent 44.5% of their time watching television, 27.8% listening to the radio, and 5.3% on the internet meanwhile newspapers, music, magazines and books resulted in a total of 16.5% combined (The Case of Print, 2007, pg. 7). We are exposed to several hundreds of advertisements every day; some of these advertisements include direct phone calls from telemarketers, billboards, and commercials. While print advertisements aren’t at the high end of the typical consumers view scale, they are the most effective due to the consistency in which they appear. The use of print advertisements in marketing is posing a great danger to all members of society, because they put a damper on both men and women’s self-worth, encourage the use alcohol in minors, and is causing obesity rates to increase. Advertisements are a huge part of our everyday lives. We see different types of ads everywhere we look; while watching television, listening to the radio, riding on the bus and even walking around your school campus. It seems like the whole world is being flooded by advertisements.
Growing up during the "This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?" campaign in the 1980s; I understand very well the importance of getting the word out about drugs and drug abuse. While I have children of my own now, I often times miss the message of current campaigns. Up until this project for class I really do not remember the last public service announcement (PSA) about drugs and drug abuse. An ad for a HBO documentary, Crank: Made in America quickly changed that.
Intro: According to Yeshin’s definition of advertising, it is a paid-for message from an “identified organisation” which gives information about a product or service in order to influence consumers (Yeshin, 18). In today’s society, we live in a place where advertising surrounds us physically and digitally. The people that typically fit into this category of consumers are people that buy items to fit in or to impress people. Sometimes ads can be misleading in ways that confuse the consumer to purchase the product for reasons other than the actual product was designed for. Advertisers influence consumers by alluding the consumer into buying this product over a generic product that could perform the same task, directing the advertisement towards a certain audience, and developing the ad where it is visually attractive.
Businesses are in game in order to earn money and advertising is the strongest weapon that helps to sell a particular product . An advertisement can be harmful and misleading as well as helpful and beneficial . Advertising in ethics is an unclear concept , but truly the main goals of corporations should be avoid misleading their customers by setting up wrong expectations and to keep their current clients .The major problem with advertising is that most of them are misleading . Advertisements create an unrealistic and sometimes irrelevant impression of an any particular product. Unfortunately, often , consumers become the victims of their tricks .
