Adversity affects people’s characters and personalities every day. Although adversity may not affect everyone, an abundance of individuals are affected every day. I have faced adversity in my life. Ever since I was little I have been playing soccer, and every day I have been trying to get better and better. My sister plays soccer as well and I have been compared to her my whole life. Being compared has changed me into a more hard-working individual and made me a better person as a whole. See, adversity does not always change people for the worse. Adversity can be found in cultural, literary, and historical references. A largely known cultural reference that adversity can be found in is The Parable of the Good Samaritan. In this allegory, the Samaritan experiences adversity through taking pity on a man who had been beaten and stripped of everything in his possession. The Samaritan broke away from their unholy and impure stereotype in order to help this battered man in need. Doing this allowed adversity to be shown on a cultural level through dissipating social “norms” which in turn changed the Samaritans character into a better and more helpful person. Historical references can be used to remind us that adversity is everywhere. A perfect example of an adverse time in history is the Holocaust. Countless Jewish people were persecuted and forced to live in a world of hardship and danger in which they never knew if they would survive another day. They faced adversity due to the fact that they were not like the others which was something that was out of their control. Survivors of the Holocaust lived the rest of their lives in fear and apprehension due to the adversity they faced throughout this torturous
