After school activities are some organized activities students could participate after a traditional school day. A large number of students would like to join one or more extracurricular activities. As one of the strongest nations in this world today, the United States has the best education system, after school activities are indispensable in the system. After school activities are beneficial to students. Being involved in after-school activities like attending tutoring, joining school sports and volunteering in the community are good ways for students to learn and develop.
Tutoring is an after school activity that students can get answers of the questions they need help with very easily; besides this, there are also other advantages. If students go to an after-school tutoring, they can not only get help on specific areas they have trouble with, but also build their abilities of finding answers by themselves (Tearney). The director of Club Esteem said students get a lot of benefits at the organization; especially they can get help when they need help on some homework questions (Little). A tutor usually helps students on particular subjects; helps them who are struggling with their schoolwork, in order to improve their grades (Does Your Child Need a Tutor). If a student has been sick and missed some school days, it will be much more easier to catch up all missed lessons and assignments at an after-school tutoring than finding the teacher for help (Tearney). In the “The Crucial Role of Recess in School” (2012) article it explains, many schools are beginning to replace physical activity, like recess, with more attention to academic subjects. What these schools are forgetting is that well-supervised recess also has benefits that surpass academics. They help make a well rounded student because recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits to the student when they are young that they carry with them into adulthood.
I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)
The After School Program provided an opportunity for students to work on homework, play games, and interact with friends and positive role models. The program was an alternative for students who might partake in risky behavior such as experimenting with drugs and alcohol, committing illegal or violent acts, and having unprotected sex. Parents benefited from the After School Program because they could trust their children were in a supervised place from 3:00 p.m. until they left work. “More than 40 percent of school districts across the country, … have done away with recess or are considering it” (Mulrine). This is a ridiculously high number when considering all the benefits that recess has on young children. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
