Which is better – co-educational or single-sex education?

Ever since the co-educational system was introduced in the 19th century, single-sex education has been gradually conceived as an outdated system. However, over the last few decades, the rising reputation of sex-segregation within the academic field has introduced a highly controversial debate between single-sex and co-educational systems. This essay seeks to demonstrate that mixed-gender education is a highly suitable system for the pursuit of academic and social success. Nonetheless, it could be argued that education does not, or theoretically should not, involve a socialising aspect, as it should merely provide beneficial academic outcomes. Admittedly then, evolving social relationships between pupils from different genders, could lead to a higher level of distraction, such as sexual attractiveness becoming a preoccupation which remains frequent throughout adolescent students (Kristin S. Therefore, pupils should not be raised through gender-distinction, by conceiving men and women as opposite poles, but following a co-educational system by grouping them together. This would encourage the rise of beneficial values, such as diversity and tolerance not only over sex, but also over ethnicity and ideological beliefs. Hence, the mixed-gender programme should be vital for educational institutions as it undoubtedly provides long-term success by decreasing social stereotyping and getting future generations familiarised with equality and receptiveness towards
