Introduction:
“Tourism can be defined as the theories and practices for being a tourist. This involves travelling and visiting for leisure related purposes” (Leiper, 1995). The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s extremely popular holiday destinations. The Gold Coast is famous for its beaches, theme parks and attractions, shopping, nightlife and rainforests. It has been attracting Australian families for many decades. The region has capitalised on its attractive environment, climate and lifestyle and has a highly specialised economy that is dominated by the tourism industry. However, several challenges/problems have been created over the years to fulfill the needs and wants of tourists.

Theme Parks and Attractions:
The theme parks and attractions found within the Gold Coast such as Wet ‘n’ Wild, Movie World, Sea World and White Water World have provided the constant support to the Gold Coast’s tourism industry over the past few years. However, the way in which the theme parks and attractions are being directed needs to be examined. If tourists continue to visit the Gold Coast then the market will continue to grow which will evidently lead to the theme parks attracting more and more domestic and international tourists as improvements to the theme parks and attractions will be able to be made due to the economic advantage coming from the constant flow of tourists. However, both Australian and overseas destinations are continuing to create a variety of theme parks and attractions to grab the attention of tourist which is making it incredibly difficult for the Gold Coast to compete as the expenses continue to grow as the competition increases. From some of Australia’s best beaches, rainforests and waterways to world class theme parks, sporting venues, hotels and resorts, the Gold Coast’s tourism assets provide an enviable lifestyle and a platform for growth. Although, all of the above challenges/problems mentioned do create effect on tourism. Tourism plays a major role in providing the Gold Coast’s economy as it offers the ideal location for tourism venture. The diverse business and leisure tourism provided by the Gold Coast attracts domestic and international visitors all year round. However, tourism in the Gold Coast also has the potential to destroy the natural environment affecting theme parks and attractions, rainforests and waterways. For tourism in the Gold Coast to be successful plans needs to be made to achieve sustainable economic, environmental and social benefits to the region and visitors.
