In many cases, a crime will either be unrecorded or unreported. Such crimes remain anonymous and so would not be counted in statistical data relating to crime. ‘The dark figure of crime’ is the term used to describe this. Criminologists have attempted to analyse and attempt to assess the size of the so-called dark figure of crime. The only way thus far has been to estimate or guess the figure, but the estimated figures differ between criminologists, although they all agr... ... middle of paper ... ...ficial figure, this could be due to people including things which they believe is a crime when its not.
The UCR does not include victimless crime, so even though prostitution is considered a crime, it isn 't reported in the UCR since there is a victim involved. Another limitation of the UCR is that when an offender commits multiple crimes, only the most severe crime is recorded, causing further discrepancies in the UCR data. 6. The data collected from the UCR is not completely useless, because by actively collecting all crime which is reported in a certain area, we are creating data pools which can be used to show crime trends. You can compare crime trends with previous years to see whether the crime rate has risen or fallen.
Although official crime statistics may appear to show the whole picture about crimes committed, they need to be treated with concern. Crime recorded by the police represents only a biased picture of the total amount of crime committed. Many problems begin when considering whether the official criminal statistics tell us the truth or not. I will explore these issues within my essay. ...
How to effectively employ measures of crime prevention are influenced greatly by the amount or extent of crime. “Official incidence reports, compiled and published as the Uniform Crime Reports and citizen-defined victimizations, compiled and published as the National Crime Surveys” (Cohen & Lichbach, 1982, p. 253). With these we have both official statistics used by the police and the justice system and then real victim surveys where by we see the amount of crime people haven’t officially reported. There are also many other day-to-day accounts, which can help narrow the scope of crime data. These include; hospital and insurance records for injuries or vehicle damages, incarceration rates, ministerial publishments and self-report surveys.
There are arguments appear that some people oppose that the statistical methods used for incidence of crime measurement. The police recorded crimes are not a valid measurement since many crimes are not observed by police on time. Hence, it is considered ineffective. Most of the crimes are being manipulated, recorded incorrectly or sometimes not even reported to the police. Thus, the number of crimes that happened is greatly

Walker pointed out few basic assumptions which are related to deterrence theory that may not work at the real world. First, offenders have to be aware of the threat (123). For example, they have to know that they are exposed to being caught if there are more police officers out there to arrest them. Second, offenders have to perceive that violations of law may lead to unwanted incidents, so they need to be avoided. They should realize the criminal record is bad for their future; if they want to apply for a job, there is low possibility that interviewers will accept them since they have criminal records.
A Comparison of Official Crime Statistics and the Actual Crime Rate Introduction I chose the title ‘Do official crime statistics where I live reflect the actual crime rate?’ This is an investigation in which I will have to compare the official crime statistics in my area with crime statistics found by the British crime survey and my own research. I chose this title for many reasons. I think that the gap between official crime statistics and the hidden crime figure is a large one. I believe this is partially the fault of the police and our system. I think that people in society do not feel they can trust or rely on the police enough to report all crimes.

A person cannot be found guilty for a crime they did not commit. Predictive policing is a valuable tool for law enforcement but cannot determine if someone is definitively guilty because
