An organisation’s management is based on theories developed by researchers that study what managers do and what instituted good management practice. This has led to the formation of a new perspective on management that is called general administrative theory. The theory we are focusing on was developed by a German sociologist named Max Weber. According to him, bureaucracy is the most efficient method of organisation. What is bureaucracy? It is a form of organisation categorised by division of labour, comprehensive rules and regulations, a well-defined hierarchy and objective based relationships. In the early 1900s Max Weber’s bureaucratic theory was spread throughout public and private sectors although it was largely discredited by organisations around the world.

Firstly, there might be a decrease in morale among employees. When jobs and tasks are specialized, there is a tendency that it would be repetitive. This can often cause boredom to some employees and thus would also cause dissatisfaction. Employees are only arbitrated on how they accomplish their main function not the way they do it. With the bureaucratic structure, employees can become passive, abandoned and indifferent to the objectives of the company. Moreover, a bureaucratic structure is rigid. The sets of rules and regulations in a bureaucratic structure are often rigid. This causes a lack of initiative and discourages creativity among employees as ideas have to go through multiple of layers of chain of commands for it to be recognised and approved. Also, a compartmentalization of activities can also occur in a bureaucratic organisation. Jobs are often delegated into specific categories, which then limits people from performing jobs that employees are actually capable of performing.
