Single gender schools might only be something you know of from movies or think it’s where parents send their children to teach them as punishment or to teach them a lesson. For me, it was the only option to get a good High School education in my hometown; So St. Teresa’s Academy it was. STA is an all-girl, private, Catholic High School with a brother school, Rockhurst, an all-boy Jesuit High School. I thought that going to school with only girls would be my worst nightmare but by senior year, I was so thankful for where I went to school and appreciative of the all-girl environment. Being in an all-girl environment lessens that chance and protects girls in a more difficult time when body image and self-esteem are most critical. That definitely does not mean girls from all-girl schools can’t talk to boys and are overly confident in themselves. It means that they are taught to defend their positions and opinions and develop a stronger sense of who they are separate from a definitive male. We wore a uniform and none of the girls would do their hair or makeup in the morning so everyone was their genuine self which I admired a lot. Thanks to how comfortable we were with our real faces and hair and personality we were not afraid of showcases that when not in the classroom. I have been told by many people that they can tell who went to a single-gendered high school by the way they hold themselves in a confident yet comfortable way and are very relatable and genuine with people, both genders
