Mars, the planet once homed by the Doctor’s archenemy ice warrior is now on its way of becoming human’s safe haven.
Mars, the Fourth planet away from Sun, second smallest planet in solar system is known for its similarities to earth. Immigration to an alien planet is no longer a cliché subject for science fictions but has gradually become a serious scientific topic and project. Among the reasons behind tide of immigration to Mars, environmental problems stand out.
Just as Christian Parenti pointed out in his book Tropic of Chaos, the environmental problem, especially climate change is happening faster than we predicted. The growing number of extreme weather events suggests that disruptive climate change is inevitable even if we begin to stop dumping green house gases. Even worth, climate change collides with current-existing political and economical problems forms a terrible collection of disasters which Parenti called the catastrophic convergence. Growing population, food safety and shortage, water pollution, urbanization and deficiency of lands all contributes to the catastrophic convergence. Parenti argued that such problems don’t just add up nut rather compound and amplify each other, in a way one problem expresses itself through another.
In his book, Parenti suggested that to resolve these problems by mitigation and technological and political adaptation. He argued that by transforming humanity’s relationship with nature and with itself, environmental changes more importantly the catastrophic convergence. Parenti as a sociology provides his solution for these problems. Some scientists are doing the same thing as the technological adaptation---aiming to change the relationship between humanity and nature. Other scien...

...opment. The interplanetary transportation technology is essential to the project. However, the nomadic in two scenarios is different. The designers suggests another nomadic lifestyle. Instead of moving from time to time on earth, future generations can solve the same urbanization and population problems by moving to mars or other planets. Human’s exploration for universe is never going to stop. One of the results of the exploration would be to colonize on other planets. Designer of Nomad: terraforming project provided the future generation with a method to concur the foreign planet.
Colonizing on Mars provides human race a second chance to resolve the environmental problems on earth and a new start to explore the limits of humanity. Megstructure Nomad:terraforming project provides the method to achieve the goal and build a safe haven for the people in future.
Supporting the theory that we can colonize mars on mars, Chris Larson wrote, “Liquid water flows, at least sometimes on the planet Mars.” (Larson 1) Needs, such as water, food, and human-survivable climates often aren’t met on other planets, so researchers try to find evidence of these. Water on Mars is a huge breakthrough because of this, as that is one previous limitation of Mars that is now known to not be one. But, there are other options too, such as other exoplanets, as in planets outside of our solar system. “Now scientists have discovered the first Earth-sized exoplanet, dubbed Kepler-186f within the so-called habitable zone of a star.”(____) That is just one example of a recent discovery. Although there might be flaws, it may be plausible to colonize on the surface of a
While Rachel Carson’s “The Obligation to Endure”, Christopher Kemp’s "Medieval Planet", and Jared Diamond’s “The Ends of the World as We Know Them” all cover subjects relating to environmental issues, each author goes about purveying his or her message in a different manner. Kemp’s New Scientist article explains humanity’s environmental effects by imagining a world in which we never existed and hypothesizing how it would look and function with our absence. Carson’s essay depicts a frightening reality about the current state of humanity and the environment. She warns readers about how we are the only species who possess the capability to disrupt and even destroy Earth’s natural patterns. Diamond articulates his work with an unusual spin, using examples of historical civilizations that have snuffed themselves out by their own progress or poor relationship with the environment. The main message conveyed in Diamond's essay is that we are just as capable of choking ourselves out by our own doing today as were the historical civilizations that suffered the same fate. Despite their differing focuses, each article agrees that humans are outgrowing the finite amount of resources that the Earth can provide. A delicate symbiotic relationship between life and the environment has been maintained throughout time. Life on Earth was shaped by the constantly changing climate and surroundings. However, humans have gained the capacity to transcend this relationship. Through our ingenuity and industrialism, we have separated ourselves from natural restrictions. Because of this progress, we have been destroying the natural cycles of Earth’s environment and continue to do so at an alarming rate. Humanity has become Earth’s infection, ravaging the worl...
Findings on Earth and other planets suggest extraterrestrial life could live in outer space, further encouraging scientists to proceed with their research. Discovering water is a great step for finding habitable planets. According to new studies, “Mars had a shallow pool of briny water on its surface long ago, NASA said in announcing what could be the strongest evidence yet that the now-dry Red Planet was once hospitable to life. ‘If we are correct in our interpretation, this was a habitable environment,’ Mr. Squyres said. These are the kinds of environments that are very suitable for life” (Bridges). Little evidence proves beings live on Mars now, but this dried up water source provides strong proof that Mars could have inhabited life in the past. Water is a key element of survival, and can also house marine life. Marine life could have simply died out when the water dried up. If Mars was truly inhabited by extraterrestrials long ago, then scientists cannot rule out living beings on any other planet in the universe, and must continue searching. Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons houses...
“I think humans will reach Mars, and I would like to see it happen in my lifetime” was said by Buzz Aldrin, a NASA astronaut. The former American aeronaut from Montclair, New Jersey believes that since Mars does exist, it is waiting to be reached by humans. When this would happen, he says that the human race would “evolve into a two-planet species.” Present day Mars has a lot of canyons, mountains and volcanoes. Even though the surface is Mars is very old, scientists learned about different younger rift valleys, plains, hills and ridges. According to recent reports, there were lakes and rivers, along with an ocean billions of years ago. The low temperatures on the planet cause there to be polar ice caps and frozen water present. Scientists continue to notice several discoveries on the planet that lead them to think there was once life on the planet. Different clues have scientists wanting to find out about even more. Many scientists in the past few centuries have been curious if life on Mars is possible or if it has ever been before.
The two essays by Michael Pollan and Curtis white talk about climate change in regards to the relationship between the environment and human beings. Although the two essays share the same topic, they take the subject and engage the readers in totally different points of views. Pollan’s essay talks about global and ecological responsibility being a personal virtue while Curtis discusses the socio-economic or political issues underlying sustainability (Pollan; White). These two essays are very different in terms of voice; however these pieces of writing are both important for people all over the world to read. Climate change and environmental disasters are a real issue. Just this year, there have been more storms, cyclones, earthquakes and typhoons all over the world. One cannot look at the state of many developing counties where the majority of the population is exposed and vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This issue on developing a viable solution for the problem of anthropogenic gases and global warming is long from being found. Not only this, many people do not want to hear about this issue since they do not think it is real. Unless people have tangible proof that their cars, thermostats and aerosol cans are contributing to climate change, they are not going to give up their lifestyles. By synthesizing the two essays, one can see that there is a need for change and that it is not an issue which should be dealt with in terms of ecological factors or even personal virtue. The social, economic and political factors affecting this problem and the move towards real sustainability should also be a topic that will raise awareness.
Mars is our next best hope in life on another planet. Because of science mankind can grow and harvest plants in the modified mars soil, make a thick warm atmosphere, and drink no frozen mars water. Mankind can grow and flourish more as a species with this idea of colonizing mars. With more scientific advancements we can colonize mars and we will colonize mars.
Scientists have dreamt over the possibility that it may be possible to live on another planet. Some think that Mars has that potential to support life, if it's hidden resources are uncovered and exploited to their full potential. There is even evidence that it once contained enough water that it had been possible to hold life. Think about it, what if we could transform it into such a place, even if only our children's children get to see any result? The following will describe Mars, present evidence of ice and water, give possible ideas for the future exploration of Mars, and give reasons for why it is important.
In their seminar, they showed graphic images of changes the earth has seen in the last billion years. They both argue that human beings have in fact had a hand in shaping the earth’s form. The growing population of the earth’s people has caused many of the land to become infertile. The building of dams, roads and cutting down of trees have also contributed to the major natural disasters. Many people think that the modern needs more technology, but in doing so we are messing with nature and it can prove disastrous for us in the end. One example, talked about the Arabs spring and its connection to the heat wave that hit Russia and destroyed about one-third of its crops. This connection seemed slightly far-fetched can be seen as global warming impacting government and our daily lives and if we don’t look into the issues, other form of revolution we begin to take place. Another example, they discussed the climate change and it can bring diseases, especially malaria and cholera. This was even worse than the “Zombie Apocalypse”. The meant it to be as a joke to the audience, referencing the shows that people watch and see the earth been infected by a strange disease and we have only select group who survive to fight this change. We don’t want to be put in this situation because clearly we were made for this earth and we don’t want it to be destroyed. So what is our solution,
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and is a seven mouth journey (space.com). The reason the planet Mars is red is because the surface is covered with minerals that make it look like the rusty color earth sees (space.com). Mars has a very thin and cold atmosphere which should mean that water cannot exist, but water and ice were discovered on the planet (space.com). Mars also has a much colder climate than earth which is why when people are on Mars, so they must wear mars suits while there (space.com). Out of all eight planets in our solar system, Mars is the most suitable for humans to live on other than earth.
The subject of my science fiction story will be the near future colonization of Mars. It will be in the form of a crew log recording the difficulties of their mission, one of which will be life support and habitation on such a long journey and potentially continuing at the surface of another planet as well. My paper will cover supplying resources for an endeavor of this magnitude, the features of Mars itself, and potential terraforming of the Martian surface to support human life. Habitation is an issue humanity currently faces with long term exposure to the environment of space in the International Space Station and as such is a problem NASA has put considerable resources toward solving in the hopes of pushing future long term manned missions to celestial bodies within our solar system into the realm of possibility. A manned mission to Mars – especially one for colonization – would certainly fall into the long term mission category and so habitation will be a central part of my explorers’ journeys.
Terraform Mars is a difficult task that us as humans are trying to accomplish to fulfill the entirety of our speeches . There is a number of ways to achieve this task , but there are many questions that we do not have answers for. This paper will present my idea for how we could terraform Mars to successfully elongate the human speeches . According to Thefreedictionary. com terraforming is defined as transforming another planet into one having the same characteristics of landscape as earth. The terraforming process could take anywhere from 100 years to 20,000 thousand years to complete entirely, due to the tedious process of making Mars suitable for human life. I believe that it will take nearly 1,000 years to complete entirely my process of terraforming mars.
Terraforming Mars is the process of purposely changing the known properties of Mars to ensure safe human habitation. In order to do this, we would have to use a 1000-year timeline. A thousand year timeline is best because it gives humans the time needed to change the atmosphere of Mars, change the temperature of Mars, grow food, and more. In order for the terraforming process to work, humans must permanently live on Mars. For humans to permanently live on Mars, a fuel source must be used.
... its terrain. Mars is one of the most studied planets in the solar system, and the study of possible life on the planet is extensive. The research and interest is not yet over and there is still much to learn about Earth’s celestial neighbor.
Mars is a very similar planet to earth in relation to size and atmosphere. Therefore it seemed like the most likely place to search for life. At the end of the 19th century, an American named Percival Lowell built himself an observatory so that it was possible for him to study Mars in intimate detail when its orbit was closest to Earth. At this time it had recently been suggested that the planet had a system of channels on the surface, present from the evaporation of flowing water. Looking through his telescope Lowell became convinced he could see a network of artificial canals. This led him to believe that there were intelligent beings on Mars who had built these canals. However, spacecraft have now visited Mars and found that there is no evidence of water at all. It is now thought that the lines he could see were the combination of Lowell's overactive imagination, and scratches on the lens of his telescope. We are now searching one of Jupiter's moons, Europa, as this seems to be the next likely place to hold life.
...ws radiation from the sun to expose the surface of the planet, adding to environment changes. If life exists on Mars today, it is most likely hiding beneath the surface. Over the past four billion years Earth has had many rocks blown from the surface of Mars, after much research, scientists say that of the thirty-four meteorites, three have the potential to carry evidence of past life on Mars (Carey, 2006). Researches have gathered evidence and continue to explore for life outside of Earth. Earth has provided these scientists with enough knowledge to understand the components needed to sustain life, therefore any research found is compared to the knowledge already understood about life on Earth. Earth is home to billions of plants, animals, bacteria and all types of living things, it is where human beings have evolved and adapted making this planet our home.
