Advanced practice nursing has become a rapidly growing area of nursing. The changes in the healthcare system and societies perception of healthcare have prompted the need for more nurses with advanced practice training. There are four types of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. These are the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), the Certified Nurse Mid-wife (CNM), the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and the Nurse Practitioner (NP). (Blais & Hayes, 2016) The CNS is considered the specialists in their field or specialty. Clinical Nurse Specialists are found in hospitals and various clinical environments. The NP's skill set is vast and inclusive of many different areas of healthcare. They are found in hospitals, clinics, and Physician's offices of many different specialties. They are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of various illnesses, both acute and chronic, and perform complete physical exams, which include detailed health histories and immunizations. Also, in most states, the NP has prescriptive powers that allow them to prescribe and manage medications. They can also manage non-medication therapies. Another of the NP's broad skill set is the ability to order and interpret lab tests and x-rays. This capability aids them in developing a diagnosis and the appropriate patient treatment plans. Nurse Practitioners also serve as educators and counselors in healthcare. These attributes are just a small amount of the enormous things Advanced Practice RN's can do. There are numerous other things that APRN's provide to the healthcare industry. Nurse Practitioners that demonstrate outcome benchmarks in line with physicians have the largest evidence-based care results of all the APRN roles.
