Although Walter and Beneatha often view each other as rivals., they are much more similar than they let on. While Walter and Beneatha rarely acknowledge their similarities, they have many including they are both big dreamers, stubborn and temperamental. Walter and Beneatha both attempt to use money to escape their current situations, and are determined to accomplish their goals despite their selfishness. Although being a colored female doctor was practically unheard of in 1959, Beneatha has fantasized about it since she was a child. “That was one person could do for another, fix him up—sew up the problem, make him all right again. The was the most marvelous thing in the world…I always thought it was the one concrete thing in the world that a human being could do. Fix up the sick, you know—and make them whole again.” (3.1.14) Beneatha explains her dedication to becoming a doctor, after seeing doctors help one of her classmates as a child.
