Recently the school board in the Huntsville Independent School District decided that it would be a great idea to jump into the twenty-first century and add technology into the classrooms. The members of the school board have read articles like “Why Integrate Technology into the Curriculum?: The Reasons Are Many”, which tell why it would be a great idea to add technology into the classroom as well as articles like “In Classroom of Future, Stagnant Scores”, which talks about all of the new ways to learn with technology. The one thing that both of these articles as well as any article you will find both for and against technology in the classroom say that when making this leap from traditional teaching to this new way a great amount of planning needs to occur, unfortunately I feel that the Huntsville Independent School District decided to ignore the part about proper planning being needed. This lack of planning has resulted in a great waste of class time as the chart above titled “Amount of Class Time” shows. When looking at the other chart above you can see that forty-two percent of class time is spent teaching, many believe that this is a good amount of time and nothing is being taken away from the students. As you can see from the other chart above entitled “Use of Teaching Time”, out of that 42% only about half of that time is spent actually teaching the day’s lesson. Unfortunately, the school district cannot go back and time and plan properly; this is why I am proposing that the school district implements a training program for the teachers to learn how to use the technology they have been given, as well as fix the technology when it is not working properly.

In my time as a student at HHS, I have experienced the above statement first-hand, and it sucks to feel like you have been ran over by an Army tank and still go to school only to have you time wasted. I know how teachers not knowing how to use their technology can cause as little as five minutes or up to half of the class time to be wasted. With just a little training and a small amount of cash teachers will know what they are doing with this new technology. It is too late to turn back the hands of time and incorporate technology in the class room the correct way but we can fix the problem, so let’s fix it that way no more sick kids will have their time wasted just looking out of window until someone can come and fix the computer.

Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life, whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low Use of Technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful.
Based on what I have read, technology effectiveness is a highly debated and argued topic among educators. There are many myths and misconceptions that even I myself have argued about technology use. For example, I always assumed that because I was a young, new teacher and used technology that most teachers who used technology were new and young like me. According to the article Research dispels common ed-tech myths, this idea is not the case. Veteran teachers are just as likely to use technology as new, young teachers (eSchool News Staff, 2010). A 2009 survey by Grundwald associates, found that as many as 34% of teachers were infrequent technology users compared to 22% who claimed that they used technology frequently, more than a third of their class time. This number is astounding to me. The research in this article seems to argue that even among those who do use technology in the classroom, many use it for tasks such as email, word processing, or games. Very few classrooms seem to be using the technology for actual learning and teaching.

Technology has changed tremendously over the past twenty years, and the world appears to be captivated by the outbreak of technology and its developments in the teaching field. Technology has altered and will change numerous ideas of teaching. The effects of technology in the classroom are connected to not to just the teachers but to the students as well. The classrooms need to stay lecture driven, but then again how will they if technology is involved. When students have no desire to learn and are given tools to distract themselves technology hurts them, or rather their test scores, more than students who learn with book or oral based teaching because the absence of distraction. Computers and iPads are very difficult to repair or replace compared to books, and because most people are not yet “technologically literate” enough to perform basic tasks for the maintenance of their computer, then it would just be easier to use books. These issues create question as to if students are ready for classes to require computer knowledge when some have difficulty learning the material as it has always been learned for thousands of years.
Technology is Changing Education The best method for improving educational standards is to utilize every tool available, including state-of-the-art technology. Computers and the Internet have expanded the way in which education can be delivered to the students of today. Today's networking technologies provide a valuable opportunity to the practice of learning techniques. Educators are discovering that computers and multi-based educational tools are facilitating learning and enhancing social interaction. Computer based telecommunications can offer enormous instructional opportunities, but educators will need to adapt current lesson plan to incorporate this new medium into all the classrooms.
The first thing I looked at was how teachers were being affected by computers. "Integrating technology into your teaching can change the way you deliver content to your classes.[1]" Not only are teachers affected by having to do grades and attendance by computers now but, they also have to worry about teaching their students about computers and integrating it into the daily lesson plans. By doing attendance on computers it saves a lot of time and confusion for schools. No one has to go around and pick up attendance and it does not have to be recorded anymore. Just one easy, quick step and it is all taken care of. In my opinion although computers can be very helpful it might take a while and some long hours for a teacher to switch over from running a classroom one way to using computers in their daily lesson plans.
Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments. It offers educational games that stimulate the brain and help children who have difficulties focusing on traditional teaching and learning procedures. College students are even taking advantage of online courses that many colleges are offering as an alternative to physically attending classes. Advances in technology and computers will continue to play an important role in education for many generations to come.

Closing the digital divide involves many components, starting with the education program and teachers. While schools are integrating new technologies into their programs, teachers are supposed to keep up with the latest technologies and use them in their curriculum to teach students. According to a U.S. Department of Education Report (1999), only 24 percent of new teachers felt sufficiently prepared to integrate technology into the curriculum they were using (Brogan, 2000). The problem is, many teachers did not grow up with computers and are not receiving the training they need to operate them (Brogan, 2000). Starting work as early as 7 a.m. and leaving school as late as 5 p.m. to go home and do even more work, leaves teachers lacking the time to learn new technological skills. Many schools offer training programs for teachers. For example, the Palm Beach County, Florida school district teaches Web basics for teachers at middle schools and magnet schools (Brogan, 2000). This is a great idea because it is giving teachers the opportunity to learn about technology and it is showing that the school district is interested in helping its employees become better at what they do.
Technology has changed many aspects of our lives, so why should we expect less of the classroom atmosphere? Technology in the classroom has changed the way students learn and the way teachers teach. Technology today is integrated into the classroom as a teaching tool rather than being taught as a course. There are many ways that technology is used in today’s classroom such as the World Wide Web, Power Point, and Excel (Starr, 2011). Teachers will continue to be the most important aspect of a child’s education because they teach and technology does not. The use of technology in the classroom can bring advantages to a child’s education but can also bring disadvantages (Cleaver, 2011).
