Addiction Treatment Center Reflection

My group experience took place at my work at the Men’s Addiction Treatment Center (MATC). This is a section 35 facility with men with substance abuse. The men are involuntarily committed to treatment due to their substance abuse which puts themselves or others at risk. This treatment program has been around for over two decades. In the program, there are a total of six groups which run daily. In addition to the daily five psycho-educational groups run by clinicians, the men must attend daily commitment alcoholic anonymous and narcotics anonymous meetings which is the last group of the day. Growing in a single-parent household, Paul did not have good role-models. Paul stated he was introduced to alcohol at a young age. From the age of 14, Paul stated he started to get out of control. He describes his upbringing the age of the hippies where everyone was doing drugs and drinking alcohol. While Paul was speaking I was fascinated by his story. He has been through so many hardships. Numerous times he put himself at risk and appear to lack insight into the consequences of his negative behaviors. Paul stated during high school his substance was so bad that he did not think he will be alive past 18 years old. After reaching 18 he was surprised and he thought he would not reach past 21. it was a few years after his 21st birthday that he again question the reason he is still alive while living so recklessly. Paul discusses his relationships and the way he would mistreat women. He states that he would have a new girlfriend and job every two years. He mentioned as he reflected on his life, he believes that he was afraid of commitment and does not really think he loved any of his girlfriends. He mentioned that he has lived a sad and crazy life. He mentioned that he regrets the way he treated women. Pual was so reckless that he took the gun by the barrel to snatch it away, at the same time the shooter fired the gun.
