Recommended: Importance of appearance

Why women are the way they are Today in society there is a very strong perception on how women should be, how they should dress, act and the “jobs” they are required to do. Whether we believe things have changed or not since the 1900s, women are still seen as a minority in our society but why? Why do we allow people to see women as “weak” and believe that there is a certain way women should look and dress? Many of the short stories, songs and poems we have read relate to this topic, “Adam and Eve” by Ani Difranco and “Job History” by Annie Proulx specifically. Eve and Lori are two characters that are the complete opposites of each other. The song is about a one-night stand and how she is proud of it, which is not normal in our society. “Tonight you stoop to my level. I 'm your mangy little whore. Now you 're trying to find your underwear, And your socks, And then the door. And you 're trying to find a reason. Why you have to leave.” (Difranco, line 1-7) Eve is supposedly seen as a whore because she is having a one-night stand, which is true to how our generation sees things. For some reason men are allowed to go out and have sex with multiple women and it isn’t seen as a problem, but society sees women as a whore if they were to do the same. Not only does society portray it that way, we allow it too and don’t do anything about it. Our society is entirely based on looks and how “the perfect women should be”. To be pretty you are expected to have the perfect body with the perfect face and hair. You could never cut your hair short because you would be considered a dyke. If you’re makeup isn’t perfect you are considered ugly and if you don’t have the “hourglass figure” you are considered fat and overweight. “Despite higher global self-esteem, women do not feel good about their appearance. This disconnect can be attributed, at least in part, to concerns about body image.” (@PsychToday, paragraph 4) Our society and social media is so caught up on how every woman should look that our own judgment has been clouded and we always believe we need to look and act that way. “The truth is that women’s insecurity about their appearance is driven by competition with other women.”(@PsychToday, paragraph 16) All we do nowadays is compare ourselves to others and that’s not how it should be. You are considered to be a “whore” such as Eve if you sleep around, so women are afraid to do it. You are considered to be “weak” if you stay at home and can’t support yourself, such as Lori. Our world is so caught up in people thinking that they need to be a certain way in order to impress themselves and others. Why do women shave their legs? Why do woman dye their hair?
