The former president and South African activists Nelson Mandela, also known as Matiba, played a major role in ending apartheid. He was a supporter of human rights in different parts of the world (Benson 16). As a member of African National Congress party from the 1940s, Mandela was a leader of armed resistance and peaceful protests against the white oppressive regime in South Africa, which was a country that was racially divided. His actions led him to serve time in prison for approximately three decades. His actions also led to him becoming the face of antiapartheid movement in his country and internationally.
He could have left prison a bitter man, but as he once famously remarked, “I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.” Nelson Mandela’s message will not disappear. It will continue to inspire fighters for freedom, and to give confidence to peoples in the defense of just causes and universal
Servant leadership can be described as the ability of serving other people, placing the collective objectives before one’s objectives and working hand in hand with your followers so as to achieve them. This type of leadership involves empowering and inspiring people as they work to achieve the set collective goals. Nelson Mandela adopted the servant leadership role in that he placed the need of the citizens before his own. While he was in jail, his desire to be free was overcome by the need for all the citizens to be free. Therefore, Mandela worked very hard to ensure that the South Africa citizens became free, and the apartheid rule that was oppressing them was abolished.

There are no longer any massacres like there was in the 1980’s. Mandela was an extreme supporter of democracy and believed that each individual person had rights and that they should not be taken away. Mandela received a great amount of awards for his fight for peace in South Africa. He even received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in South Africa. The human race needs to learn to live more like Mandela and try to help their fellow man out, instead of fighting.

People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
On 18july 1918 and named Nelson by one of his teachers, Mandela led the struggle to reinstate the apartheid rule of South Africa against racial discrimination.
