Accepting Cultural Diversity in Today's America

We are a nation of immigrants and as such we should not expect those new to our country to behave as we do just because that is the way we do it; our beliefs and behaviors have taken time to meld into one 'common' practice and even though many cultures observe customs that the common American may find unacceptable, I believe these new Americans have a right, based on our constitution, to maintain their heritage within the limits of our laws. The preamble of the Constitution of the United States tells us that the constitution was developed to “insure domestic Tranquility”, “promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessing of Liberty” and the first amendment reads “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” (Find Law for Legal Professionals) Although the first amendment addresses religious differences many of those tenets are what culture is built on. In the story of A Father Mr. Bhowmick struggles to reconcile his feelings of loss for the “old ways” while trying to keep up with the changes his wife and daughter seem to have wholly embraced. This is the other side of the coin for most Americans; many don’t consider the difficulties of immigrants fitting into our society from their perspective. They may or may not speak our language, they have left family and friends behind, nothing is familiar, and depending on where they settle, they may not be able to find something as simple as the food they are accustomed to or to have it handled in the manner required by their culture or religion. After all, the immigrant has made the choice to change their circumstances, where the natural citizen may not understand the need or drive that caused them to make that change.
