For many years, dieters have called acai berries a super fruit. Many diet pill companies have touted the health benefits of acai due to its rich antioxidant content. Unfortunately, popular weight loss claims surrounding this berry are unfounded. Little scientific research exists to back up false and exaggerated statements made by diet pill manufacturers.

General Information

Acai berries share a similar appearance with grapes and are native to Central and South America. Deep purple in color, the berries are a staple in the diet of Amazonian populations. In the United States, Brazilian acai berries are often consumed in pill and beverage form and are commonly taken as a dietary supplement.

Ingredients

Acai berries are nutrient-rich and contain large amounts of vitamins and minerals. They are also packed with antioxidants, which are useful in boosting the immune system and fighting the aging process. These berries also contain protein, fiber and omega fatty acids.

Brand Name Variations

As a dietary supplement, acai berry is often listed on nutrition labels by its common name. Occasionally, its scientific name, Euterpe oleracea, is used. Acai can be found in powder, liquid, tea and pill supplements.

Mechanism of Action

Diet pill companies claim acai works for weight loss due to its high antioxidant and omega fatty acid content. The berries are said to burn fat while protecting the body from free radicals. Because of difficulty in transportation, diet pills often contain negligible amounts of acai berry. Supplements are sometimes enhanced by fillers such as sugar and other additives high in calories.

While diet pill companies have long touted the benefits of acai berries, little to no scientific evidence supports these claims. While it is true that a diet rich in antioxidants can promote good health, there is nothing in acai berries that cannot be found elsewhere. The only proven way to lose weight is through portion control, a balanced diet, and physical exercise. No magic pill or wonder fruit is going to replace the hard work and effort it takes to shed actual pounds.
