Mission’s Objective
The Space Out mission has several objectives for humans, when they settle on Mars. One of the objectives is to build and maintain a hydroponic/aquatic system. The purpose of creating a hydroponic and aquatic system is to research on whether functions like these can operate in Mars. A hydroponic system will be needed for this colonization process because it will provide food, organisms, and life to Mars. This hydroponic system would be the farm of Mars and it would provide livestock to the 50 humans who are settling out for this mission. Additionally, the plants would provide oxygen to this small colony on Mars. Now, another goal the Space Out mission is to research the rocks and sediments found in Mars. The humans will study, observe, and analyze the rock material in Mars to see whether if life exists or existed. Including, the people who are sent out to this mission will analyze the area where water might have existed. Humans must perform extended research in this mission because there could be other methods to sustain this colony such as energy, food, and resources that could possibly aid them for other purposes. The primary goal for the Space Out mission is to analyze and perform research that was discovered by robots, rovers, and satellites to improve long duration flight in Mars. Adding more to that goal, the space crew, the people who are sent to Mars, will perform different areas of studies depending on the type of knowledge these people contain. This would mean engineers, doctors, scientists, and many other people would facilitate this mission because the diversity would encourage a better, safer environment on Mars. The roads will be constructed out of glass material surrounding the martial land, which will help eliminate the exposure of radiation. The roads will connect to all of the headquarters in the Space Out Colony. The fifth headquarter will produce crops and a hydroponic. The Agriculture center is the fifth headquarter of the Space Out colony. This colony will grow and store crops in the facility that is powered by the solar panels and the wind turbines. This area contains a refrigerant cooling system and it will slow the process of the rodding of food. The Agriculture Center will contain similar farming practices that are done in Earth. The 5 headquarters will each need satellites to improve the communication in the area. Also, the 5 headquarters will leave the colony with a well-functioning society.

Brief Descriptions of the Original Activity: After completing notes, the students watch the Mars Rover video and do questions related to the movie. We then normally do follow up worksheets with which orbiter has explored particular planets in a chart that includes the names and what was discovered. Then the students create their own rover and write a paragraph about what they would like the rover to explore. This is mostly focused on Mars because the students can then view GoogleMars and see what has been discovered with the pictures that have been released.
Living on Mars is nearly impossible, especially with limited food, water, and lack of communication. For Astronaut Mark Watney, this newfound isolation was his life for the span of a year. All of Earth thought he was dead. In fact, his funeral had already taken place. Somehow though in a miraculous fashion, Watney was able to survive his seemingly tragic fall, and stay alive in the heart of a dust storm. With the rest of his crew leaving and sending out reports that he had died, not only was Watney alone, but nobody even suspected he had a chance of being alive. Fortunate for Watney, he was an expert in botany and chemistry. These fields of science were able to benefit him greatly in growing more food, and figuring out how to keep himself hydrated.
In my Genius Hour Project, I researched long-term colonization of Mars. I chose this topic because I have always been fascinated by other planets and space. What we cannot see has always made me wonder. I pursued my interests in this project. I set a goal to learn about Mars. This experience has made me much more knowledgeable and curious about other planets.
Findings on Earth and other planets suggest extraterrestrial life could live in outer space, further encouraging scientists to proceed with their research. Discovering water is a great step for finding habitable planets. According to new studies, “Mars had a shallow pool of briny water on its surface long ago, NASA said in announcing what could be the strongest evidence yet that the now-dry Red Planet was once hospitable to life. ‘If we are correct in our interpretation, this was a habitable environment,’ Mr. Squyres said. These are the kinds of environments that are very suitable for life” (Bridges). Little evidence proves beings live on Mars now, but this dried up water source provides strong proof that Mars could have inhabited life in the past. Water is a key element of survival, and can also house marine life. Marine life could have simply died out when the water dried up. If Mars was truly inhabited by extraterrestrials long ago, then scientists cannot rule out living beings on any other planet in the universe, and must continue searching. For this purpose, in the past century, scientists have sent several probes and experimental vehicles to the Red Planet to prove that there is a possibility of life on Mars. In the 1960s and 1970s, US Vikings and Soviet Mars probes were sent by scientists and reached Mars. Data from the Viking landers proves that there were water molecules present on the planet. The experimental vehicle, Curiosity, was sent to Mars to prove that these water molecules actually came from lakes, streams or rivers. As a country we need to start investing more money and research into space technology. Programs currently exist for this effort, but the potential for research and progress is limited by a lack of funding; compared to other government funded programs, aerospace funding is pitiful. Continued research in space technology is a necessary step in our growth and development not just as a country but also as entire human race. If we are to achieve this goal, it is necessary to increase funding for space research and technology and consider the possibility of colonizing outer space. If we limit our existence to the planet Earth, and continue to drain the resources on this planet, we will destroy the only home we have.
Scientists have dreamt over the possibility that it may be possible to live on another planet. Some think that Mars has that potential to support life, if it's hidden resources are uncovered and exploited to their full potential. There is even evidence that it once contained enough water that it had been possible to hold life. Think about it, what if we could transform it into such a place, even if only our children's children get to see any result? The following will describe Mars, present evidence of ice and water, give possible ideas for the future exploration of Mars, and give reasons for why it is important.
The water contained under the soil has had some various effects on the Mars terrain. When the robots were on mars collecting samples, they found some rocks that looked like rocks from prehistoric life here on earth. When analyzing these samples, the scientists deemed that the water was very acidic and salty. This is similar to some of the earlier times in the Australian area.

Humans can expect to face some major challenges on an expedition to Mars. It has been proven that humanity can travel in space for over two years. Cumulatively, Sergei Constantinovich Krikalev, a Russian cosmonaut, has spent over eight-hundred and three days in Earth orbit (Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, 2005). The expedition to Mars would require the crew to endure a six month journey to the planet, a year of living on the planet, and a six months journey back to Earth. Russian cosmonaut, Valery V. Polyakoz, clocking in at four-hundred and thirty-eight days for just one stay in Earth orbit, shows humanity is capable of a twelve month round trip to Mars (Schwirtz, 2009). Earth's orbit has provided some benefits to space exploration, like the magnetic field from cosmic radiation, and the proximity to Earth if an emergency were to arise (Jones, 2009). The further humans travel away from Earth the greater the risks become. The major risks to human health on a flight to Mars, living on Mars, and returning to Earth are: radiation exposure, biological problems induced by weightlessness, spacecraft malfunctions, and psychological problems brought on by isolation.
There are many reasons that space exploration should continue. If Earth ever becomes too overpopulated or over polluted, then perhaps people can move to Mars. The world population in 1970 was approximately 4 billion people, and is currently nearly 6 billion people. The world population in 2015 is estimated to be 7 billion people. There is a possibility that there are useful resources on Mars. Scientists have found ice and some other clues, such as craters, volcanoes, and valleys, that have led them to believe that there was once life on Mars, and they believe that sometime in the future, should planet Earth need to be evacuated, humans will be able to live there (Jakosky 142). Many of the rocks on Mars appear to have been formed by gasses, breathable by humans and other creatures. A process called terraforming will allow astronauts to make use of the resources that are on the planet and create an atmosphere that will support life. One method for terraforming is that scientists would convert the gaseous rocks back into gasses, and use gas-eating organisms to eat the gas, which results in the formation of other gasses. If these organisms continue the cycle, then Mars would have a stable atmosphere for humans to live in (Getz 39).
With issues like climate change, and population overgrowth, our species faces the risks of major extinction (4). Climate change has been a man-made problem of recent years that threatens our planet. It will take huge mitigations from current and future societies to even come close to reversing climate change. Not only that, but our population has been growing at an extremely alarming speed. At our current rate, our species may not be able to survive for much longer. This is where space exploration comes in. With the recent discovery of water on mars, and the finding of Kepler-78b, it is possible that mankind can prolong our existence. The possibility of interstellar travel seems to be an option or even a necessity if we wish to continue living. Populating another planet could help solve the population crisis and climate change simultaneously. Though, it seems we are not at that point currently, which is exactly why it is imperative that the government increase funding for space exploration. Now, even if inter-galactic habitation isn’t possible, space research helps us protect ourselves from asteroids and other threats, and could also be used to find other planetary resources. Space exploration can lead to the possibility to find useful resources throughout the galaxy for human gain. Many severe problems on earth could be solved through space exploration such as world hunger, overpopulation, and dwindling fuel sources. Things such as fuel could be harvested from planets for power generation and propulsion technology, and land to cultivate for growing food, as well as land for building living areas for the growing population.
