Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The couple also had two other children, Abraham's older sister Sarah and younger brother Thomas, who died when he was an infant. Lincoln lost his mother at the very young age of 9. She died of tremetol at 34 years old. This was very hard for and caused him to alienate himself from his father. He didn’t like the work he had to do when his mother died. His father soon married Sarah Bush Johnston and Lincoln grew to like her quickly. As he got older Sarah encouraged him to read and he eventually received a formal education that lasted eighteen months. In 1840, Abraham became engaged to a woman named Mary Todd. In 1841, the engagement was suddenly broken off for an unknown reason. The two met again at a social function and got married on November 4, 1842.
