Abraham Lincoln, One Nation Under God Abraham Lincoln was one of the most eloquently spoken and forward thinking presidents the United States of America has ever had. Although his views were opposite to the majority at the time, he had a very clear view of the people in his country and the unforgivable wrongs that a great percentage of his people were enduring. While in office the civil war occurred and he was asked to address the nation at the dedication of the cemetery at Gettysburg on November 19th, 1863, later referred to as the “Gettysburg Address”. At this ceremony the president delivered a poetic, inspiring and strikingly valid two-minute speech leaving the nation in awe. In the civil war, this price was paid so that our nation could stand together and have all of the citizens free with liberty but it was not taken lightly. This war happened right in the nation’s backyard and claimed many lives all American citizens fighting for America. Lincoln was called to dedicate part of the battle field but stated, “We can not dedicate –we can not consecrate –we can not hallow – this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract” (Baym, N. 2013, p.747). Instead his words are as relevant now as they were then, once a solider gives their life they have made a sacrifice beyond any that a living person could even begin to understand. Although they do so knowing their efforts were for a greater good that price is far too great for any living person to afford, and is not by any means an easy move to make. Lincoln understood this and truly honored those who fought on that battlefield by recognizing that they made a valiant sacrifice many people do not have the bravery or strength to make themselves. Unfortunately, we are at war now again and there are still many soldiers making more of these sacrifices for America
