When Samuel Morse developed the telegraph and sent its first message in 1844, he had no idea of the effect that it would bring to the future of communication. He would change warfare, politics, and the world forever. Before the telegraph, all warfare communication was very slow and costly via horseback. The author covers how the telegraph revolutionized communication and strategy on the battlefields during the Civil War. The differences and benefits of such communications on the battlefield is compared with pre-telegraphic warfare. The source is reliable because the writer of the article is an expert on communications (Tom Wheeler, Chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission) who used many primary source documents in his research. This source did not give me any information on the outcome of the Civil War and lacked in defining terms, but this article did help me gain a general understanding of how important the telegraph was to the outcome of the Civil War, and originally got me interested in this …show more content…

The beginning of the documentary shows how he received telegrams from the front lines and how he used the telegraph to communicate information on the war to his generals. The documentary is reliable because it was published by PBS, a well-known, non-profit television channel that provides educational shows. The documentary was helpful because it showed me how Lincoln could use the telegraph to give important information and make decisions from behind a desk. I used the information to support my thesis that the telegraph left a legacy of better communication for warfare and speed up the pace of wars.
