Abortion and the Importance of Religion
There is a negative relationship between support for abortion and the importance
of religion, while controlling party affiliation. Among males, there is a negative relationship between support for abortion and the importance of religion. Among females, there is a negative relationship between support for abortion and
the importance of religion.
A person’s religious background greatly influences whether or not they support
abortion. When religion plays an important role in someone’s life, they are less likely to
support abortion. Most religions strongly disapprove of the taking of someone’s life.
They consider it one of the highest sins a human can commit. They believe that abortion is
considered murder because even a fetus has a spirit so it shall be considered a living
human. When religion plays a less important role in a person’s life, they are more likely to
support abortion. These people are more likely to consider reasons for the abortion rather
than never permitting it. These people tend to look at the women and why she is
requesting the abortion. They are less likely to consider a fetus a living being until it is
born.
The first hypothesis indicates that the higher the importance of religion is to a
person the less supportive they would be of abortion, with regards to that persons political
party affiliation. The party in which a person identifies with will have a direct effect on the
link between support for abortion and the importance of religion. Political parties, as well
as a persons religious background, play a major role in attitudes towards different issues.
By nature, democrats are more likely to approve abortion than republicans. A person’s
religious background usually has an effect on which party they associate themselves with.
Therefore, there must be a link between a person’s party affiliation, religious background,
and their support of abortion.
The second and third hypotheses indicate that gender has an effect on support for
abortion based on their religious beliefs. I believe that men are less likely to approve
abortion than women because of the women’s’ movement that has been going on for
years. Many women are more apt to approve of the idea of pro-choice. They want to
decide what is best for them, not some politician in Washington, D.C. A 90’s women is
more independent than say a 50’s women. They are battling for women’s rights.
Abortion is a very controversial issue which directly effects women’s rights. I believe that

Abortion has been a controversial topic plaguing our society for quite some time now. There seems to be two clear cut stances on abortion: pro-life and pro-choice. But then what a lot of people fail to realize is that there are many people who cannot make up their mind whether they agree with abortion or not. Many believe that abortion is against their religion, that taking another's life is wrong, but they also are haunted by questions such as: 1) What if a woman is raped and then becomes impregnated? No one wants a reminder of such a tragic event, especially a child who would have half the rapist's chromosomes. 2) What if giving birth to a child would put the mother's life at risk? 3) What if giving birth to a child would most likely result in the death of the mother and the child? 4) What if a woman becomes impregnated via incest? Does she really want to have a child that would be fathered by her father or other close relative?
For over two centuries abortion has been an issue of controversy within the United States; furthermore, at the heart of this debate lies the standoff between advocates of pro-life and of pro-choice. Individuals who identify as pro-life strongly oppose abortion, believing it to be unjust and illegal. The argument pro-life advocates often put forth is that the fetus in question qualifies as a human being; therefore, to end its life prematurely is akin to murder. Pro-choice advocates, on the other hand, are strong supporters of placing the power of decision within the mother’s hands and allowing her to determine what is best for both her and her unborn child. One of the biggest issue of abortion goes back to the controversial question of when human life actually begins. Many people will often argue that a fetus is a living being from the moment of conception and feel that it deserves the same legal protections as an adult, therefore making it immoral to kill it. Just like in our court system, we would not put an innocent person on death penalty. The fetus has done nothing wrong and has the right to live. As the editor of Christianity Today wrote, "abortion is one of those monumental issues of justice that comes along once in a lifetime. It is violence against children, a hideous act of poisoning or dismembering tiny bodies, then dumping them in a landfill or garbage disposal." On the other hand, those who are for abortion say that a fetus is only a "potential human being." The advocates for legal abortions want the mother to choose whether she keeps the baby or kills it, and the rights of a mother supersede the rights of a baby. John M. Sw...
This issue of abortion also belongs to larger issues such as religious and ethical. People with the religious background have a set of values based on the Bible and believe that pro-life should be the only stand people take into consideration in order to protect human life and keep the baby alive. The other class is ethical. From this stand people can choose whether or not they believe abortion is the right thing to do and can make their own choice based on their values, regardless of what religion they are. Because abortion is such a widespread issue, it is crucial that we come up with an agreement on what is best and what steps are necessary in getting to that agreement.
Another issue that arises is the potential personhood of the fetus. Many would argue that its poten...
The right to choose, right to pursue and right of speech has been a natural right our founding fathers have strived to preserve since the day it was violated. Though, the right they fought to preserve only benefited if thou were a white male, we slowly have come to include the rest of our population regardless of sex or of racial orientation. Women, in particular, have come a long way since their debut in World War II and continue to dismantle the misogynistic traditions we have deeply ingrained into our society. However, women are facing another obstacle: the right to abort an unwanted child. The controversial topic of abortion has been touched upon by politicians, religious groups and the women themselves and although it has been marked
... who are not ready to take on the challenges and responsibilities of raising children. To have millions of poor, homeless and unhappy children in the world to cope with life’s injustices would be far more heartbreaking than extracting an embryo from a uterus. Abortion is a very complex issue that should remain a personal decision. The bottom line is that each woman should make her own decision based on her own morals and beliefs.
Abortion is a voluminous topic today all around the world. Differing viewpoints on abortion are recognized in politics, religion, and throughout the general population. There is a small amount of people who are nonchalant on the subject. Women have abortions for many different reasons and according to certain groups these reasons are either justified or not. Everyone tends to have their own articulated opinion, and many vocalize tenaciously what they believe. Pro-life individuals along with religion are sanguine that abortion is ethically and morally erroneous. Whereas those who are pro-choice say that abortion is inconsequential and the mother’s choice is more important than the fetus. Reasons to not get an abortion include risks involved in receiving an abortion. In some cases death can occur. However, there are other alternatives to abortion. For example, raising the child and adoption.
After all, abortions became legal in only 30 states. In addition, the moral effects of abortions have risen in the past years. Another reason that women should be able to have abortions is in case the mothers are too young and unable to take care of their babies. Unwanted pregnancies can be very stressful for women. Therefore, if women th...
They believe that a fetus has the right to live, and it is not the decision of the mother to take away its life. After conducting research, it seems that pro-life activists are connected with religion, in Canada the activists form a coalition by the catholic churches and stand outside hospitals protesting against abortion. However it’s not only the church groups that are anti-abortion, Leah de Vries from the Windsor Star seem to be against it as well, Leah states, “Some people say that abortions are good but abortions have killed more living organisms than humans in 9-11 and all humans in every U.S. battle.”(deVries, 2013) Unfortunately, this a true, in fact, according to the world health organization they estimate 40-50 million abortions every year worldwide. As we read this paper they are already 34 million abortions in the current year of 2016, this number is referred by the “worldometer” website that uses statistical data by well-known organizations. Another unfortunate fact is “that 25% of all pregnancies now end in abortion” (Hanbury, 2016) from the Relevant Magazine, which is one in four pregnancies. But how does this have an impact in society? Basing of social mores, pro-life individuals believe that abortion is murder, in society they are many other options that are more moral than abortion, such as adoption. They also believe that if the women does
Personally, I believe people today should look more into this matter and consider what is right, especially basing their choice on the morals they have. Many politicians have discussed the problem with innumerable disagreements and the difficultly on the solution of the dilemma. No matter what choice they make, there will always be somebody who is displeased with the decision. On August 2, 2013, Bob Burnett wrote in The Huffington Post on the subject, titling the article “Abortion Politics.” In the article he talks about the attitudes and the political stands on the matter. According to him, polls haven’t changed since 1973 on how over fifty percent of women support abortion but under certain circumstances will they be able to have the option. People prefer women to wait a certain amount of weeks to make a final decision. Another Article written on November 13, 2013, by an author by the name of Shannon Bream, writes about an incident in Texas in The Fox News Network. She titles the article “Supreme Court Refuses to Block Texas Abortion Restrictions.” Texas law req...
Abortion has been an issue since 1820. In the beginning the problem was more about protecting doctors who have licenses. “Regular doctors thus had an incentive to ban abortion as part of an effort to drive irregular doctors many of whom were women out of business” (Straggenborg, p.211). The AMA (American Medical Association), which was the group that the regular doctors made, started a campaign that made the people believe that the white population was getting smaller and the population of the immigrants was rising. Abortions were made illegal to insure the stability of the population of American citizens. It seems odd that the only reason that abortions were made illegal at one point was because of money issues and a lust for white supremecy. It seemed to have nothing to do with the rights of a child or a woman. One of the reasons why abortion came into question in the beginning of the 1950s was due to the fact that a lot of doctors and lawyers were seeing many cases of illegal abortions and it was becoming a large social problem. Since there was a lack of competition for legal abortions, doctors found no problem making them legal again -- “They felt that abortions were justified under certain circumstances, and they begun to see the laws against abortion as an infringement on their own medical discretion” (Straggenborg, p.212). And so the issue arose again with many pro- choice groups speaking up. Then with court cases like Griswold v. Connecticut and Roe v. Wade, abortion again became legal in the United States.
... a partner. Majority of women do not use proper contraceptive when being sexually active and then when they get pregnant they use abortion as a leeway for their own poor decision making. Women cannot just get an abortion because of their poor actions it is time for them to step up and take responsibility for their actions.
If the mother is completely healthy, and if the unborn baby is totally healthy as well, then there is absolutely no reason to have an abortion and kill an innocent child. But overall, if the mother wants to abort the baby, just because she doesn’t want it, then it is 100 percent her choice (Borgmann 20-26). Ultimately it is her body, so therefor, it is her choice. It’s hard to tell when abortion is acceptable because it can be hard to tell when the fetus becomes alive. At 11 weeks, internal organs are present and functioning (Beeke, “Is Abortion Really so Bad?”). God’s word clearly treats personhood as commencing at conception. God forbids murder, and abortion is murder (Slick, “Is Abortion Wrong?”). Some people believe that when the male sperm and female egg combine, life begins (Beeke, “Is Abortion Really”). “This throws in the question of whether it is okay to have the abortion because the fetus isn’t even alive yet or it is not okay because the fetus is alive and it has become a baby” (“When is The Fetus ‘alive’?”). Instantly after conception the child is obviously already growing, and so therefor, it is alive (Sanders 15-19). It’s just whether someone wants to accept that or not. According to a student organization, since the legalization of abortion in 1973, over 56 million unborn children have been killed, that is more than the entire population of Spain. That is 155 babies per hour, about every 24 seconds (TFP Student. . .). That is a lot of dead kids. According to Andrew Napolitano who wrote about abortion, “a society that prefers death to life, not only cannot prosper: in cannot survive. The baby in the womb is a person” (“Is Rape Moral”).The point thrown out here is pretty plain to see. If our society as a whole prefers to kill people, not only people but children, because they don’t want to give birth to them, which is pretty selfish by the way, how can we fully prosper? The practice of abortion in
