Among the many topics that were hotly debated during the course of the most recent presidential election cycle was whether the government should stop providing government assistance to Planned Parenthood. The primary reasoning Republicans and pro-life organizations continue their attempt to defund Planned Parenthood is the belief that doing so is the right thing to do to stop abortions. Not only will defunding Planned Parenthood not stop abortions, it will reduce many people’s (men, women and young people) access to basic health care services where potentially no option, other than Planned Parenthood, is available. As such, defunding Planned Parenthood is detrimental to public health and wrong.

Zero taxpayer money goes directly to support abortion. In fact, directly providing taxpayer dollars to support abortion would be a violation of several laws including House Energy and Commerce Committee bill, H.R. 3200, and the Hyde Amendment. The later has specifically blocked Medicaid funds from being used for abortion services regardless of whether a women’s health is at risk or the procedure is recommended by a physician. The government’s defunding of Planned Parenthood cannot prevent abortions as the law prohibits reimbursement for these services using government funds. Since abortions are performed at Planned Parenthood health care centers using non-government provided funds, these abortions will continue to be performed even if Planned Parenthood is defunded by the …show more content…

Over half of these centers are in areas of the country that are medically underserved and have the largest positive impact on minority communities or communities that are significantly distanced from main stream health care providers. In these instances, Planned Parenthood often serves as the communities’ only primary health care option providing treatment of acute and chronic disease, minor office procedures and health assessments, evaluations for referrals to specialists and authorization for hospital care. Patients living in remote rural areas can talk with Planned Parenthood providers through online services or through real time video technology. These innovations in using technology for providing healthcare have helped achieve a forty year low in teen pregnancy. Defunding Planned Parenthood will result in limiting or eliminating health care access to people in this country especially those in low income, predominantly minority areas or rural areas that are significantly geographically removed from main stream health care
