An abortion is the process of ending a pregnancy by a medical or surgical procedure. (“Abortion” par. 1). Abortion was legalized in 1973 (“Abortion” par. 19). Abortions affect every person involved. The main people it affects is the mother and the baby (fetus). There are many issues involved in getting an abortion like; The medical issues the mother and baby could go through, The moral issue of when life really begins, and the issue of should it be a choice for the mother to make. When getting an abortion the women should realize that it can cause many medical issues. Some of the major long term risks of an abortion for the women receiving it are: Death, different cancers, complications of later pregnancies and labor. Some immediate complications are: infections, excessive bleeding, hemorrhaging, fevers, abdominal pains, and vomiting (“Abortion Risks”) Death being one of the more serious long term complications, “Legal abortion is reported to be the fifth leading cause of maternal death in the United states (“Abortion Risks”). Natural causes, suicide, and homicide have been known as causes of death of women who have gotten an abortion. Depression can be caused by the abortion which can lead to suicide. It is said that in the year after the women gets an abortion that there is a 60 percent chance they will die from natural causes, They are seven times more likely to commit suicide and fourteen percent more likely to be killed. (“Abortion Risks par. 2 & 5) Different types of cancers can also be caused by getting an abortion. Those who get one abortion have a 2.3 higher risk of getting ovarian cancer than those who have not gotten one.
