Abortion has been one of the most controversial issues in the world that people debate for last few decades to determine whether the abortion is another type of killing or not. United States government has legalized abortion to every state with the limited circumstances. In this paper, I will discuss the value of life principle and the principle of individual freedom. I will also focus on different stages in the development the conceptus in the life design to determine ideal time of the beginning life for human in different perspectives between the antiabortion (pro-life) group and the abortion-on-request (pro-choice) group.
Antiabortion and abortion-on-request groups argue on the abortion in terms of the genetic view; however, we cannot judge when the human life begins in terms of genetic views. Pro-life group considers human life begins at conception and applies the value of life to the terms embryo, fetus, and conceptus (Thiroux 229). The development stages of the conceptus provided in our textbook is following.
1. One cell divides into two and then four, and the egg has embedded itself on the walls inside of the womb by the sixth day (Thiroux 227).
2. the forming embryo is about two millimeters long by the third week and starts to develop various parts of the body (Thiroux 227).
3. By the end of the fourth week, the size of embryo becomes five millimeters. Its tube-shaped heart is starting to beat; it has gill-like arches and a pronounced tail; and it looks something like a newt or a tadpole (Thiroux 227).
4. “By the fifth week, gross divisions of the brain can be distinguished and developing eyes and limb buds appears” (Thiroux 227).
5. “By the sixth week, it is 13 millimeters (about half an inch long); its eyes are still on the side of the head, as in most animals, and its reptilian face has connected slits where the mouth and nose eventually will be” (Thiroux 228).
6. The tail is almost gone by the end of the seventh week and sexual characteristics can be distinguished, and the face is mammalian but somewhat pig-like (Thiroux 228).
7. “By the end of the eighth week, the face resembles a primate’s but it is still not quite human; some lower brain anatomy is well developed, and the fetus shows some reflex response to delicate stimulation” (Thiroux 228).
8. After tenth weeks, the face has an unmistakable human look, and it begins to be possible to distinguish sex of the fetus (Thiroux 228).
