History has shown that whenever abortion had been prohibited, women still attempted and succeeded in obtaining illegal abortions. Unfortunately, they have suffered serious health reasons or died in the process. Bibliography 1. Joffe, C. Doctors of Conscience: The Struggle to Provide Abortion Before and After Roe v. Wade. She might have a solid reason such as rape or incest or a medical reason where she would suffer terrible harm from going through with the pregnancy. The world should not go back to the illegal abortion days where five thousand women died yearly from illegal and unsafe abortions. Ultimately, all lawmakers should think before taking away abortion and how this backward step would be taking away a woman's rights and what she would suffer if there is no or very restricted access to abortions.
According to an article on a women’s history web site abortion laws started developing in the 1820’s “forbidding abortion after the forth month of pregnancy”(Lewis, 2004). It also states that “most abortions had been all but outlawed by 1900”(Lewis, 2004). In 1965, all fifty states banned abortion. Of course there is always an exception to the rules a loophole if you will, you can still have an abortion if it would “save the life of the mother, in case of rape or incest, or if the fetus was deformed” (Lewis). It was not until 1973 that the Supreme Court ruled most existing state abortion laws unconstitutional via the case of Roe vs. Wade.

Doctors were not concerned about the saftey, and it lead to abortions being done by untrained midwives or other providers. In Guttmacher, Abortion in Women's Lives, they state "the criminalization of abortion did not eliminate the procedure, but instead put many women's lives in jeopardy by forcing them to seek clandestine precedures. Many were preformed in unsafe conditions." (Boonstra 13). A decade before it became legal, abortion was only allowed if the womens life was endangered or in cases of rape.
The Roe vs. Wade case in 1973 legalized abortion, thus sparking the match to a never ending debate. Pro-life advocates believe that women should not be given the right to an abortion. Giving women the right to an abortion is similar to giving serial killers the right to murder whomever they want. Abortions lead to various health and psychological effects. “Almost half of all pregnancies among American women are unintended [and of those pregnancies about] 1.3 billion each year, are ended by abortion.” (Dudley).
The baby has never done anything wrong it was the mother's fault and the baby has no chance. Abortions should be illegal no one except rape or incest patients should have them. The main question behind abortion is whether the act is murder of an unborn child or the right of the mother to choose what happens to her body. A lot of research is needed before an individual can make a rational decision about what side of the abortion issue they take. This paper focuses on the argument that abortion is a woman’s choice in her first trimester of her pregnancy only, and after that time period is over the unborn child has the right to life just like any other human being. "This middle ground is what a lot of people believe these days, the right for a woman to choose in the first trimester only" (Baird 179). People who believe this are stuck between the two sides of abortion.
