There has been a great number of abortions throughout the world. Abortion has been a controversial topic which some people may or may not agree on. As defined in Free Dictionary by Farlax abortion is “the termination of pregnancy before the fetus is capable of survival outside the uterus”. In many developed countries abortion is legal, but some countries do not permit abortion because it may cause maternal death. In the story “Hills like White Elephant” by Ernest Hemmingway is about a man referred to “the American” and the girl name, Jig, plan on having an abortion because the American man thinks it is better for them. A case Roe vs Wade was a case in 1973 that was the Supreme Court’s decision on legalized abortion in the United States, but many people still believe that abortion is considered murder. Abortion is considered murder because a woman is getting an operation done that is killing an unwanted baby in her womb. Jig seems really frustrated to have an abortion. “’It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig” the man said “’ (Hemmingway121). The American man tries to take Jigs mind off of the surgery “It’s not really an operation at all” (Hemmingway 121). It violates a human right. An abortion should only be done when either the health is affecting the baby or the mother who is at a health risk. Many women may get abortions because either their husband or boyfriend could be insisting them. Jig thinks the relationship with the American man will get destroyed if she does not get an abortion. “Then what will we do afterwards”? “We’ll be fine afterward. Just like we were before” (Hemmingway 121). One of the reasons many woman want to get an abortion is because of an unplanned pregnancy or some partners refuse to use contraception. A woman should not be forced or pressured to having an abortion just to save a relationship because is a woman’s health concern. A woman that is being insisted or indirectly talked into an abortion through their partners may be going through domestic violence “A 2012 study reported that as many as 25 percent of the women who have abortions have been subject to domestic violence.
