A contemporary ethical issue which raises many diverse views and perspectives worldwide is abortion. The Catholic Church defines abortion as “the direct and purposeful taking of the life of the unborn child. In principle, Catholic Christians believe that all life is sacred from conception until natural death, and the taking of innocent human life, whether born or unborn, is morally wrong.” As the Catholic Church teaches, "Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being" ("Donum vitae," 5).
Ethical is defined as a “system of principles governing morality and acceptable conduct. Ethics are the principles of right and wrong that are accepted by an individual or a social group.” Abortion is therefore an ethical issue as different people hold diverse views on whether it is morally right or wrong to terminate a pregnancy. A person’s thoughts and opinions vary from individual to individual based on their morals which are mainly based on their beliefs, their upbringing and education this impacts on what they believe is right and wrong. There are many individuals who are for abortion and believe it should be the mothers choice whether to keep or terminate the pregnancy especially if the mother isn’t in the right head space, or cant financially support a child, as well as them accepting it to be ok to abort when the baby has been conceived under awful circumstances such as rape or incest. Overall, abortion is an ethical issue which people hold different perspectives on based around their beliefs and personal understanding of the issue. The Catholic Church is strongly against abortion and finds it should not be an option no matter the circumstances and other ways like adopting out once born should be an option over abortion if one can’t raise a child for whatever reason. The catholic church believes that it is an inhumane act to kill and innocent child who cannot yet stand up for itself but yet still has the same rights as any other person human life must be considered sacred at all stages of life from the moment of conception until natural death.
