Abortion in the United States The United States Government should illegalize abortion for many different reasons including, a potential life has ended before given a chance remains evidence enough for most people to understand why a person should never have a choice of whether a baby lives or dies. Studies also show that mothers who choose abortion have a higher health risk rate after the abortion and also have more psychological problems after the abortion as well. Not only is it proven that abortions cause pain to the mother of the baby but the Fetuses can feel pain during the abortion procedure as well. Another big reason most people believe abortions are not right is because, It is stated in the bible that a baby becomes a life after conception. One of the biggest problems however is that most people feel that the founding fathers did not approve of abortions because they stated “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness (Should Abortion be legal?, 2013 )." The United States government should protect the health and welfare of not only its citizens but of the citizens being born every day. In 2011 there was approximately 1.06 million abortions took place in just the United States alone (2014 Loxafamosity Ministries). However this is down from the estimated 1.21 million abortions in 2008 (2014 Loxafamosity Ministries). From 1973 through 2011 nearly fifty-three million abortions have occurred in the United States and this number is not including all the black market abortions that occur on a daily basis (2014 Loxafamosity Ministries). In a 2006 study conducted by the CDC, it was reported that 53-56% of abortions were performed on white women between the ages of 20 and 29. Among the 46 states that provided data consistently during 1996--2006, a total of 835,134 abortions (98.7% of the total) were reported; the abortion rate was 16.1 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15--44 years, and the abortion ratio was 236 abortions per 1,000 live births. During the previous decade (1997--2006), reported abortion numbers, rates, and ratios decreased 5.7%, 8.8%, and 14.8%, respectively; most of these declines occurred before 2001. During the previous year (2005--2006), the total number of abortions increased 3.1%, and the abortion rate increased 3.2%; the abortion ratio was stable. (CDC, 2009)

Three Works Cited Many people believe abortion is only a moral issue, but it is also a constitutional issue. It is a woman's right to choose what she does with her body, and it should not be altered or influenced by anyone else. This right is guaranteed by the ninth amendment, which contains the right to privacy. The ninth amendment states: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." This right guarantees the right to women, if they so choose, to have an abortion, up to the end of the first trimester.
Abortion, which is defined as a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, is one of the most controversial issues in society. Many people believe that abortion is unethical and morally wrong, while others believe that it is a woman’s right to decide what to do with her body. According to www.census.gov, “the number of abortions performed annually in the U.S. has leveled off at 1.2 million a year” (1). This statistic supports how many women are choosing abortion. Although abortion is legal in the United States, many people continue to voice their opinions on how it is a human rights violation and should be illegal everywhere.

Before 1820 abortion was legal and practiced, despite the fact that it was a dangerous procedure and more often than not resulted in the death of the mother. it wasn't until after 1821 that abortion started to become regulated and laws were set in place (lewis 2011). in 1879 the first law to be set up was in Connecticut, it was targeted towards merchants that sold poisons to cause miscarriages and drugs to prevent pregnancy and banned the use of the products. By the late 1800s even though abortion was illegal in most states it was still done under the table. Most people didn't get persecuted for illegally performing an abortion, mostly because of a lack of proof that the abortion was performed. the fetus was often disposed of and without it there was no proof of an abortion. most of the time the only way an abortionist could be convicted was if the woman was injured or died during the procedure, other than that it was next to impossible for someone to be convicted (Macadam 2001). in 1967 colorado and callifornia became the first states to legalize abortion, and in 1973 the supreme court made abortion legal across the united states (McBride 2006).
According to CNN (cable news network), since the legality of abortions by the supreme courts in 1973, the number of abortions has increased gradually. The CDC (centers for disease control and prevention) reported 1,292,606 abortions in 1980. The number count continued by millions until the year 2000. Rates began to decrease, but the numbers still remained high. 2009 is the year CDC has recently given reports on the statistics of abortion in the United States. The ratio in that year has been 227 out of 1000 live births. 64% of abortions legally induced were performed at eight or fewer weeks during the gestation period. Women ages 20-29 were the 57.1% who went for an abortion. 51.2 % of the women were white (including Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women) 41.2% of the women were black, and 7.6% of adult females from other races. Abortion has been accepted by the United States of America ever since the monumental Roe vs. Wade case in the early 1970’s, but is still a very controversial issue. Many people are for and against abortions. Some people say that the child inside its mother’s womb deserves the opportunity to live, while others believe that a mother has the right to choose whether or not her fetus can live or die. Other advocates for abortion claim that abortion helps keep the threat of overpopulation down. They also say that in many extreme cases, it is in the best interest of the mother and the child that the fetus be aborted. Abortion helps keep the crime rate low, so it should remain legal, they also say.
Abortion is a controversial topic all around the world. Many people believe that abortion is a woman’s right because it is her body and she should be able to make her own choice whether she wants to keep the baby. Whereas, many other people believe that it is inhumane to end the life of an unborn child and they also see it as violating human rights. I personally do not believe that abortion should be legal. To me, it is not morally and religiously right.
