Islam Overview:
Islam is an Arabic word that means surrender, obedience and submission to Allah (God) (Khorfan et al., 2010). Islam is one of the three major religion in the worlds which Christianity and Judaism. Islam has two main resources that Muslims depend on them in their daily life. These sources are Holy Quran (the words of Allah) and the saying of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that called Sunnah (Almatary et al., 2014). In addition, a third source was considered for making the decision for complicated issues after evaluating these conditions. This source is called Ejtihad (ijma’a) which means moral agreement between religion leaders about specific situation (Khorfan et al., 2010). In other words, the leaders are meeting to discuss some issues and proof that decision from the Holy Quran and The Sunnah (Almatary et al., 2014). The fourth source is Qiyas which means the religion scholars are using the logic to evaluate moral issues in general (Khorfan et al., 2010). Muslims are using all of the sources to support most of the issues such as abortion. Islamic law is flexible and deals with every aspects of our life to eliminate any threat a person might face in the life.
In Islam, there are four Sunni jurisprudence schools that Muslims follow: Hanafi, Shafi’i, Hanbali, and Maliki (Khorfan et al., 2010). Each of these schools named according to its religion leader that means the scholars of these schools explained the Islam from different prospective.
All of them are practicing the Islam in right way. Furthermore, the four schools are supporting each other. For instance, if the Muslim who is following the Malki School has a complicated situation, he can look at the other schools for alternative solution to his situation.

Furthermore, a pregnancy that resulted from rape will give the mother two options. First option, the mother can terminate the pregnancy within 120 days. Second option, the mother is encouraged to take care of her newborn. As mentioned early, Islam has four schools and all of them agreed in the prohibiting the abortion for uncritical circumstances (Aramesh, 2007).
In addition, the two sectors in Islam concurred with forbidding the abortion after the ensoulment (Aramesh, 2007).
Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him applied a tort for the fetus who passed away due to abortion after the 4 months of gestation (Hedayat et al., 2006). The tort is based on the fetus sex and on which stage of development the fetus was aborted (Hedayat et al., 2006). Consequently, the people who got involved in the abortion should ask for forgiveness (Hedayat et al., 2006).

For as long as there has been recorded history, there have been recordings of the procedure now known as abortion. The Bible appears to be silent on the topic, which is of no support to Christian groups, especially Catholics, who believe that abortion is a mortal sin. In his book, “The Morality of Abortion: Legal and Historical Perspectives,” John T. Noonan (1970) states that “The Old Testament has nothing to say on abortion” (6). John Connery (1977) agrees with Noonan in his book “Abortion: The development of the Roman Catholic Perspective” where he writes, “If anyone expects to find an explicit condemnation of abortion in the New Testament, he will be disappointed. The silence of the New Testament regarding abortion surpasses even that of the Old Testament” (34). This is a difficult silence to understand when one considers the fact that abortions were widely practiced during the New Testament era in the Middle East. There were few recorded legal prohibitions against abortion in antiquity, and even fewer ancient laws protecting the practice (Gilbert 1).
Islam is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion alongside Judaism and Christianity. It is currently the second largest religion in the world today. Its beliefs come from the Qur'an which literally means "the recitation" which is believed to be a literal transcription of the word of God. Its main prophet is named Muhammad who began Islam by speaking with the angel Gabriel in a cave during his meditation and then acting as an instrument of God to help write the Qur’an. Muhammad then spread Islam to the scattered tribes of Arabia by becoming the leader of Yathrib and using his wonderful leadership abilities to then grow his influence over virtually all of Arabia. Muhammad is known by Muslims to be the seal of the profits because no profits after Muhammad should be considered legitimate. Muhammad also left behind the Hadith or “tradition” which is a collection of writings compiled of reports of Muhammad’s actions as leader of Yathrib. These reports are used as a more specific code of ethics in day to day life and from these reports the 5 Pillars of Islam are derived (Smith 160). Although Islam shares many similarities to Judaism and Christianity it is often viewed in the US with hate derived from preconceived notions following the attack on September 11th 2001. This paper seeks to provide an overview of Islam’s history as well as its two major sects and 5 main pillars to remove preconceived notions and provide a glance into the minds of the Islamic people.
Islam is a based on the ministry of Muhammad, peace be unto him and the words spoken to him by Allah through an angel, Gabrielle. I learned a lot from Woodlands Junior School and Allah’s Word. I wanted to have a brief overview of Islam, not specific religious teachings. These websites included Islam’s basic beliefs and rituals. They also defined the Qur’an and the significance of Muhammad, peace be unto him. A brief description of the 6 main beliefs that Muslims have was also outlined.
Abortion is one of the most debated topics, some people believe it is immoral while others support this issue. Abortion is define as termination of pregnancy before birth. This article was published by Dennis Prager, who wrote a story that was titled, “Jews and Abortion”. I decided to review this article because most of the world religions are anti-abortion but some religions do allow it. For example, Judaism does not prohibit abortion, it’s one of the many religions that does not perceive abortion as murder, and rather they see it as a need if the mother's life becomes at risk due to the pregnancy. In Judaism an abortion can only be perform only if the child will directly cause the mother to die if it is not aborted.
Abortion is the termination of a human pregnancy that does not end in birth of a child. There are two types of abortion-medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortion can be done before 49 days of pregnancy by using pharmaceutical drugs. Surgical abortion takes place by using surgical instruments between 6-14 weeks of pregnancy. Both methods are safe. It depends on the size of fetus and week of pregnancy. An abortion, which is the removal of a fetus from a woman’s body, should be allowed because of women’ s freedom, life opportunities and victim protection.

Abortion has been an issue since 1820. In the beginning the problem was more about protecting doctors who have licenses. “Regular doctors thus had an incentive to ban abortion as part of an effort to drive irregular doctors many of whom were women out of business” (Straggenborg, p.211). The AMA (American Medical Association), which was the group that the regular doctors made, started a campaign that made the people believe that the white population was getting smaller and the population of the immigrants was rising. Abortions were made illegal to insure the stability of the population of American citizens. It seems odd that the only reason that abortions were made illegal at one point was because of money issues and a lust for white supremecy. It seemed to have nothing to do with the rights of a child or a woman. One of the reasons why abortion came into question in the beginning of the 1950s was due to the fact that a lot of doctors and lawyers were seeing many cases of illegal abortions and it was becoming a large social problem. Since there was a lack of competition for legal abortions, doctors found no problem making them legal again -- “They felt that abortions were justified under certain circumstances, and they begun to see the laws against abortion as an infringement on their own medical discretion” (Straggenborg, p.212). And so the issue arose again with many pro- choice groups speaking up. Then with court cases like Griswold v. Connecticut and Roe v. Wade, abortion again became legal in the United States.
In the Islamic faith the Shariah is more than just a moral set of laws that the faithful must follow, it also doubles as the legal laws as well. For this reason it can sometimes be difficult to use these laws in the court system. In addition to the Shariah there are four sources of Islamic Law. These include the Sunna, the responsible personal opinion, the community consensus, and the Koran.
Abortion is defined as a procedure that is done to remove an embryo or fetus from the uterus of its mother in order to prevent its birth (Roth, 2005). Abortion is categorized as a bioethical issue because it relates to the morals of biomedical advances, policies and research. Abortion is a difficult subject that can involve personal morals and beliefs, legality and religious values. The issue is often viewed from either the side of pro-life, which places emphasis on the fetus and its right to life or pro-choice, which emphasizes the rights of the mother to decide the appropriate action (Roth, 2005). This brings the ethical question of should the government have the right to outlaw abortion into debate. The two viewpoints of pro-life and pro-choice explore the two main moral issues concerning abortion (Roth, 2005).
There are many similarities and differences between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. There are also many differences that separate the three major religions of the world. This paper will delve into all three of them.
People from different countries are either for or against legalization of abortion. Some say that abortion should be a part of women’s rights as it limits unwanted pregnancies. Others say that it is against their values and religion; so they can’t tolerate this action. Unfortunately, almost all Muslim countries forbid abortion except for “special circumstances”. However, in Morocco, saving the life of the woman, and preserving her physical and mental health are the unique cases in which abortion could be tolerated. What if a woman is rapped? Or what if she gets pregnant by mistake? Should her undergo her pregnancy? Or should her ask for an abortion?

Even though it is a diverse religion, all of the Muslims are monotheistic and solely believe that Allah is the creator of everything, including humans. As a human being they believe that they are in debt to God or simply stated as according to Seyyed Hossein Nasr, “Therefore, all that we are and all that we have belongs to God for which we are indebted to Him and for whose gifts we must give thanks (shukr)” . God is the Absolute and the main point of the Islamic religion is that it is crucial to worship him and follow his commands, and that will lead to peace among everyone. This particular religion has continued to rapidly grow throughout the world and as with most religions, it will continue to grow.
Islamic law is the most widely practiced religious legal system in today’s world. It is based on morality rather than commercial requirement of human behaviour in all aspects of a person’s self and social life. Islamic law is based on the Holy book of Islam, the Quran and on interpretation of the practices and sayings of Prophet Mohammad. It also follows the writings of scholars and teachers of Islamic scholarship, who derived rules by analogy from the principles established in the holy Quran. The basic foundations of Islamic law remain unaltered even after many centuries
Abortion is one of the most controversial issues discussed in today’s society. This issue has caused a great deal of turmoil in the world. Some protestors have even killed other human beings over the issue. People’s religion has had some input on this issue, but this should not be the only factor when looking at this serious controversial debate. There are many questions that one must ask him or herself when deciding to be either for or against abortion.
