Abortion Abortion is a very controversial subject and many people have varied

attitudes and opinions on its rights and wrongs. It is vital that in

society that more and more people become anti-abortion before it is a

trend that spirals out of control. Abortion means to end something

before it has been made complete. There are two types of abortion,

spontaneous abortion and induced abortion. Spontaneous abortion which

is naturally occurring and commonly called a miscarriage and on the

other hand induced abortion which is when the 'mother' intentionally

ends an unplanned pregnancy.

Many people use abortion as a type of birth control or contraceptive.

Instead of people avoiding pregnancy with the use of contraception

women are opting to be irresponsible and solving the consequences with

abortion. Why is this happening, why are people using abortion as a

type of contraceptive?

Furthermore abortion is undoubtedly murder of the cruelest nature.

There are several methods for abortion but none of them can be

possibly seen as acceptable. One method is to insert a metal or

plastic tube into the uterus through its opening, and then a spoon

like instrument at the end of tube is used to scrape the walls of the

uterus. A suction machine at the other end of the tube sucks out the

remains of the baby from the uterus. Another method is dilation and

evacuation this process is similar to the last but is used on older

babies. This procedure uses forceps, curette and a vacuum. During

prepared to have unprotected sex she should be prepared for the fact

her actions may begin a new life. Abortion should not have to exist in

this day and age when pregnancy and be easily prevented and if a

'mother' does not want her child would it not be better to have it

adopted to a family who would love a child rather than be murdered? A

pregnant woman's rights are no greater that an unborn child's but the

women has the advantage of speech to make hers heard, something that

baby ill never have.

It is obvious that abortion is a polite word for murder but yet it

goes on every day mostly unopposed and legally. It is of the greatest

importance that it stops because who is to say that in years to come

that anyone of any age can be legally murdered because people do not

want responsibility?

Many have witnessed and experienced the bitterness of such a controversial debate. There are two types of people in this world. Pro - choice activists believe in the right to choose a safe, legal abortion. Pro - life activists believe that abortion is murder. Why is the debate over abortion so emotional? Some argue about the rights of the fetus (unborn child) while others argue if abortion should be legal. The debate usually strays from these basic issues. Accordingly so, making an abortion seem like it may be okay due to those tragic events. However, one tragedy will not answer these problems with another one occurring.     Perhaps one of the most controversial issues debated between lawmakers and legislatures is abortion. Disputes concerning abortion began during the 1820s. By 1965, with a few exceptions, abortion had been made illegal in all states. Abortions were only permitted when the fetus was deformed, or if birth of the baby would harm the mother’s life. All of this changed however in 1973 during the landmark Supreme Court Case of Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion. The Supreme Court recognized that it is solely a mother’s choice whether to become a parent. The court also recognized that an issue as significant as child bearing warrants the highest level of constitutional protection. According to the Court, a state’s interest in potential life is not “compelling” until there is a status of viability—the point in pregnancy at which there is a reasonable possibility for the sustained survival of the fetus outside of the womb. The Court also affirmed that the right to privacy is not absolute and that a state does have a valid interest in safeguarding maternal health, maintaining medical standards, and protecting potential health. Under the Court’s decision, a state may, but is not required to prohibit abortion after viability, except when it is necessary to protect a women’s life or health.

The AMA (American Medical Association), which was the group that the regular doctors made, started a campaign that made the people believe that the white population was getting smaller and the population of the immigrants was rising. Abortions were made illegal to insure the stability of the population of American citizens. It seems odd that the only reason that abortions were made illegal at one point was because of money issues and a lust for white supremecy. It seemed to have nothing to do with the rights of a child or a woman. One of the reasons why abortion came into question in the beginning of the 1950s was due to the fact that a lot of doctors and lawyers were seeing many cases of illegal abortions and it was becoming a large social problem. Since there was a lack of competition for legal abortions, doctors found no problem making them legal again -- “They felt that abortions were justified under certain circumstances, and they begun to see the laws against abortion as an infringement on their own medical discretion” (Straggenborg, p.212). And so the issue arose again with many pro- choice groups speaking up. Then with court cases like Griswold v. Connecticut and Roe v. Wade, abortion again became legal in the United States.

This includes adults, children, and also fetuses that are unborn in the mother’s womb.
