Samson and Delilah
Midterm Project
Samson was a Nazirite that was given to his parents by God to save the Israelites from the Philistines. Samson was known for his incredible strength. There were many rules that Samson was supposed to follow in his life that he broke. Samson suffered the consequences of breaking the rules and losing faith in God. He lost track of his purpose given to him by God.
In the story of Samson and Delilah, Samson fell off track and fell in love with Delilah. Delilah did not love Samson and was just using him to get silver from the Philistines. The Philistines offered Delilah silver if she could find out the secret behind Samson’s strength. “See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver” (Judges 16:5).

Her first few tries failed because Samson lied to her about what his weakness was. She then gave her best performance and pretended to be very hurt that Samson was not telling her his secret. Samson finally gave into his temptation and told Delilah his secret. He told her that he was a Nazirite and if his hair was cut off that he would lose his strength. Samson said to Delilah, “No razor has ever been used on my head,’ he said, ‘because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man’” (Judges 16:16–17). Delilah cut off Samson’s hair when he was sleeping. Overall abbot Samson was a good abbot who was respected by his piers and by the people that followed under his rule. He was wise and was very good at maintaining the land he controlled. He also was able to pay of most of the debts that were created under abbot Hugh’s term. Abbot Samson had created new buildings and had appointed new management for the land in order to keep the land maintained and at peace. He listened to the king and the pope who were his superiors and there was never a serious issue while abbot Samson was in term.
In the “Letter to her Son” Abigail Adams uses diction, tone, and style to author a loving and warm hearted letter to her son, John Quincy Adams, in order to encourage him to improve and possess honorable qualities.
David was the youngest of seven brothers and was in charge of tending to his father’s sheep while his father and three of his brothers went to war. The Israelites were at a standstill with the Philistines, but were too scared to fight because the Philistine army had a huge giant, named Goliath. David was a scrawny, young boy, but he told Saul that he wished to kill Goliath. He had never killed another human before, but his strength was in his faith that God would protect him. Even though he was offered armor and a sword, he took only what he was used to: a staff, a sling, and five smooth stones. A person must be accountable for his/her actions. In the play “The Crucible” Abigail Williams is a victim of her society. She is a vindictive person who always had to have her way, and also lead the girls in the accusations. However, can she be excused or pardoned because of the influence of outside forces upon her?
Evil is defined as being profoundly immoral and malevolent. It is characterized by suffering, misfortune, and a force in nature that governs and gives rise to wickedness and sin. In Puritan times, all sins against the church were considered illegal and wicked. Sins such as adultery, vengeance, and manipulation were some offences considered to be immoral in the town. Abigail Williams was the initial instigator of the witch hunt in Salem in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible. She lied and accused others of witchcraft in order to save herself. In the early 1700’s Abigail Adams decided to write a letter to her son, John Quincy Adams, explaining why she was so insistent on him going to the voyage to France. She only knew that this trip would be beneficial for him as he already had an advantage for knowing the French language. In Abigail Adams’ Letter to Her Son, (1780) she argues that pushing him into going on this journey also made herself feel guilty, but knows that it will only give J.Q. Adams the great experience needed to grow and mature. She advises him on going by using her ‘motherly tone,’ comparing him to past authorities, such as great Cicero, as well as using his great nationalism to convince him even more that this trip is necessary for him.
Judah’s greatest shortcoming was their denial of God and the resulting action of them walking away from Him. They had done this by making offerings to other false gods and worshiping the work of their own hands (Jeremiah 1:16, English Standard Version). Even though they had sinned against God, he tried to remind them that they once loved him like a bride in their youth (Jeremiah 2:1-3, English Standard Version). The Lord would send Jeremiah to call Israel and Judah to repentance. Even after all, of their sinful ways, the Lord would say to them returned to me and I will not show anger towards you.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it appears to be that Abigail is a victim of her society. She was, in a way, pressured to do what she had done. Many things may have influenced her behavior. That much is obvious. However, she should not be excused for what she did.
How can a girl who condemned seventy two to a death sentence and drank a charm to kill a man’s wife, a man she has slept with on more than one occasion be the victim? It’s possible when the town she lives in is worse than her. Although Abigail Williams is typically thought of as the antagonist of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, she is in fact a victim as much as any other tragic character in the play.
1st Samuel 17, is where the story of David and Goliath comes from. In this story Goliath from the Philistine army challenged the Israelites to a one-on-one battle. Seeing as that Goliath was almost seven feet tall, nobody wanted to battle him. One unlikely Israelite offered to fight the giant, his name was David.
